Human Rights Week

Hosted by UCSB Human Rights Board
Feb 10 at 10 AM – Feb 14 at 5 PM

Hello everyone! We are so excited to announce that the eight annual Human Rights Week will be taking place Week 6 (February 10-14) with the theme of “Human Rights At Home.” Throughout our discussions, we realized that many of us have become desensitized to human rights violations and atrocities occurring worldwide. As a response to this, we have decided to attempt to take these abstract concepts by “bringing it home” to UCSB students and make these things more applicable in general. Each day has its own respective theme relating to ways in which we, here at UCSB, can support, educate, and uplift each other. Hope to see you during HRW next week!

February is Black History Month, so today on “The FPT”: An Afro-Punk Hall of Fame, featuring everything from Proto-Punk to Post-Punk.

Artists: From Big Mama Thornton, Screamin Jay Hawkins, + Sun Ra & The Blues Project, to Death (punk band), Magazine, Basement 5, National Wake (South Africa), The Gun Club, + more.

“The Freak Power Ticket” airs on Mondays in the Winter from 11am-1230pm PST.

UCSB Zero Waste Committee

Hey everyone! As you might remember, two weeks ago we have an event in collaboration with IV Trading Post. We wanted to give a huge thank you to everyone who came out to spend their Monday night with us upcycling clothing and learning more about fast fashion. Here’s some key takeaways from our trivia table, in case you didn’t get a chance to stop by or you wanted a little refresher:
* Fast fashion companies design clothes that fall apart or become unfashionable in a strategy called “Planned Obsolescence”
* It takes 7,000 liters of water to produce 1 pair of jeans
* 85% of plastic pollution in the ocean is due to the microfibers from synthetic clothing
Thank you once again to everyone that came out to this lovely event, y’all are amazing!

Next up in the Associated Students Workshop Wednesday series, Podcasting 101 with Lisa Osborn, News and Public Affairs Director at KCSB. Staff, students, and faculty welcome! All workshops meet 3 to 4 p.m. in the AS Annex, Bldg. 434, Rm 141H by the Storke Tower bike circle. Spread the word and bring friends. More info at: https://mediacenter.as.ucsb.edu.

Today is day 3 of Human Rights Week! Come show your support!

In light of recent events in Iran, it is evident that the United States and other Western Superpowers have historically invaded countries in the Middle East, Central/South America, Africa, and Asia under the guise of “help.” The reality is much more alarming: the actions of these Western superpowers have actually contributed to regional instability and has contributed significantly to genocide, neocolonialism, and various war crimes.

An Evening with Dr. Bernard Lafayette Jr.

Hosted by AS Program Board Presents…
Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 8 PM – 9:45 PM
UCSB IV Theater

A.S. Program Board Presents… An Evening with Dr. Bernard Lafayette Jr. : Nonviolence in a Time of Civil Unrest on Thursday, February 20th. Doors will open at 7:45PM, and the event is open to ALL ages.

Bernard Lafayette Jr. (or LaFayette), a longtime civil rights activist and organizer, was one of the Great Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. Enduring 27 attacks and arrests for his dedication to the movement, Dr. Lafayette had been a steadfast advocate of nonviolence– even before Martin Luther King Jr. offered him to become the program director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

Dr. Lafayette was a crucial player in the early organization of the Selma Voting Rights Movement, as well as one of the biggest contributors to groups like the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the American Friends Service Committee.

Come celebrate Black History Month with us, and welcome one of history’s greatest civil rights leaders.
