Coastal Fund

Today’s Sea Life Spotlight is….Felimare californiensis! This nudibranch, commonly known as the California blue dorid, is (understandably) University of California’s unofficial favorite sea slug. While the dorid once used to be abundant in southern California coastal regions, it started to disappear from these areas in the 1970s. However, in 2003, F. californiensis was spotted off the coast of Santa Catalina Island, and in 2011, the species was seen in the waters near Santa Cruz Island. Although numbers are still low, it’s possible you may see this gorgeous deep blue and yellow slug if you’re diving at the Channel Islands, so be sure to look for some underwater school spirit!
