UC International Student Advocacy Conference

Saturday, September 12, 2020 at 10 AM – 5 PM

The UC International Student Coalition is virtually hosting its first International Student Advocacy Conference on September 12th, 2020 from 10 am to 5 pm PDT. Our conference will feature a guest panel on intersectionality and workshop session topics on international student mental health, LGBTQIA+ barriers, and resource inequities. Our conference mission is to facilitate a community space promoting international student solidarity and grassroots advocacy efforts on issues of resource inequities, cross-cultural barriers, and more.

Have questions or concerns about your bike? Come talk to one of our mechanics during our Zoom consultations. We want to be able to help you the best we can during this period of time with respect to COVID-19 safety guidelines. Our consultation hours will be open Monday-Thursday from 12-4pm for the rest of session B!

We’ve included a testing site update in this week’s post! Also please keep in mind that the numbers we post are only reported cases and therefore may not be an accurate representation of how many cases currently exist. Please keep practicing social distancing and continue to wear a mask!💚

Happy National Wildlife Day! California is a global hot spot for biodiversity, and our home in Santa Barbara is no exception. This native flora is the Coastal Bush Lupine, lupinous arboreus, that grows all along the coast! It is a perennial shrub that can reach up to 2 meters tall! Its flowers are either this bright yellow or a light lilac. While out and about today try to find some other native wildlife while wearing a mask and keeping a safe distance from others.

AS Food Bank and Miramar Pantry will be closed for the week of September 14th-18th. AS Food Bank will be open Friday, Sept 11th and will reopen Wednesday, September 30th. Anticipated Fall hours for AS Food Bank are Wednesdays and Fridays 10am-2pm. Miramar Pantry will reopen the week of the 21st. Anticipated Fall hours for Miramar Pantry are : Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 4:00-6:30 PM.

Given that both pantries are closed the week of the 14th, the UCSB Food Security and Basic Needs Taskforce will be doing a pop up produce pantry for food insecure UCSB students on Wednesday, September 16th. We will be focusing on fruits, veggies, and some grain (e.g. rice/pasta).

Please sign up below if you would like free groceries on:

Wednesday,
September 16th, 2020
5pm-7pm
at the UCSB Food Security and Basic Needs Advising Center (Also called the “SNAC”)
(at the UCen, next to Jamba Juice, across from Storke Plaza).

This is open to all current UCSB students and their families who are experiencing food insecurity.

If you are showing any signs of illness, please do not come to the distribution and instead, please sign up for deliveries for people who are sick or immuno-compromised: https://forms.gle/sxpJYL7X2BDwqYN27

Please come wearing a face covering and please help us to ensure that everyone stays at 6ft distances. We will have sneeze guards around distribution tables, distancing markers, sanitizer for use at the distribution, and our staff will also be following safety guidelines.

If you are an international or undocumented student, please note that this program does not trigger public charge rules and no data is reported in a way that could affect public charge.

UCSB students will be asked to share their student ID/perm number below. Family members/dependents of UCSB students will not need to report their name. Instead we will just ask for the number of people in the family.

It is ok for a non-UCSB student who is sharing a household with a UCSB student to pick up the groceries. In this case, we ask the non-UCSB student to be able to provide the name and student ID/perm number of the student they live with in order to pick up groceries.

Student ID/perm numbers will be used to identify demographic and financial metrics on participants to report broad statistics about the group of students we are serving and to evaluate total versus unique participant counts of the community the UCSB Food Security and Basic Needs Taskforce serves. No data specific to individuals will be shared outside this program.

If you have any questions, please reach out to kcmaynard@ucsb.edu or visit http://food.ucsb.edu/ and use the chat box in the lower right hand corner.

September 22 has been declared National Voter Registration Day – what better excuse to check your voter registration and make sure your residence and mailing address is accurate and up-to-date.
“Voting in California has never been easier and registering to vote is the first step,” said Santa Barbara County Registrar of Voters Joe Holland. “All California residents are eligible to vote was long as they are a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old on Election Day.”
The deadline to register to vote in California for the upcoming Presidential Election is October 19. Registering prior to this deadline ensures that voters receive all the voter material they will need.
“I highly recommend registering to vote before the October 19 deadline,” said Holland. “It ensures that the voter has the opportunity to receive, review and mark their ballot safely and securely at home.”
There are several ways to register. Forms are available online at SBCVote.com or RegisterToVote.ca.gov. Paper applications may be available at most U.S. Post Offices, Santa Barbara County Registrar of Voters Offices or the Department of Motor Vehicles. To verify voter registration status or update registration information, such as an address or party affiliation, go to SBCVote.com.
If a voter misses the October 19 registration deadline, they may use the conditional voter registration process through Election Day, and must go to the County Registrar of Voters office or a polling place to register and vote. Ballots cast conditionally will be processed once the Registrar of Voters Office has completed the voter registration verification process.
The three election offices in the county will be open for voting, voter registration and voter questions from October 5 through Election Day, November 3.
