Spring 2021 Week 8

KCSB News presents: “A Year in COVID: Medical Racism, Care Disparities, and Health Misinformation.” Join us via Zoom on Tuesday, May 18 at 4pm for a panel exploring the topics of health inequity among marginalized communities and the role of communication in medical mistrust. Featured panelists include:
* Dr. Van Do-Reynoso, Santa Barbara County Public Health Director
* Dr. Jason Prystowsky, Emergency Medicine Specialist Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital
* Frank Rodriguez, Policy & Communications Associate – CAUSE
* Lawanda Lyons-Pruitt, President of NAACP Santa Maria and Lompoc
* Dr. Lillie Williamson, Assistant Professor of Communication Science, University of Wisconsin-Madison
From this discussion we hope to gain an understanding of how medical racism functions to oppress marginalized groups, the role of misinformation during moments of crisis, and where we go from here – envisioning how medical leaders, community advocates, and journalists can work collectively to combat structural inequities in the medical sphere and beyond.
