Fall 2020 Week 8

Happy Sea Life Spotlight everyone! Let’s start Week 8 off on a good foot, or should I say arm, because this week we’re looking at the brittle star! You can catch these little guys crawling across the tidepools, but don’t let your eyes deceive you; while closely related to sea stars, the brittle star is its own deal, using its arms to move as opposed to its vascular system. Their central disk is where the five-jaw mouth is located, which they use to feed on plankton and small crustaceans. A cool fact about brittle stars is that they don’t have a heart!

Welcome to Week 8 Gauchos! As we head into the holiday season after an election cycle, and with a second wave of quarantine, it’s important to take care of yourself. With limited in-person celebrations, online solutions can be helpful, as well as maintaining communication with your family and friends.

In the middle of a global pandemics masks are a necessity and should be worn everywhere you go (especially as the holidays and flu season roll in!)But unfortunately, disposable masks have become a huge source of waste as of late. Luckily, reusable masks aren’t hard to come by. They can be bought at the store or made by hand at home with minimal supplies. A recent survey put out by one of ZWC’s members estimates that in Isla Vista, more than 2,000 masks are being used and subsequently disposed of every day. Being so close to the ocean, this can become a dangerous source of plastic pollution that can negatively effect wildlife. Stay safe and sustainable by making the switch!

What are you grateful for this year? KCSB invites you to call into their Holiday Hotline at (805) 253-3091 and leave a message to be played on the air! Just include your name, where you’re calling from, and something you’re thankful for or looking forward to in your message.
