shared S. Monique Limón’s post:
“After meeting with the Associated Students UCSB, I learned that 48% of undergraduate students and 25% of graduate students at the UC are reported as food insecure. … As a result, my very first bill will combat food insecurity by addressing the needs of our college students. Assembly Bill 453, which I introduced today will ensure unused meal program funds go towards students in need.”

FOOD SECURITY APP
In an attempt to address the food security problem many students face, the A.S. Office of the Controller is considering working on an app that notifies UCSB students of extra food from on-campus events. They would like to measure how much need there is for an app like this first.

Food for Freedom Fair
Saturday, February 25th from 12-5pm!

The UC Global Food Initiative found that 41% of UCSB students identify as having low or very low food security, with food security defined as the lack of reliable access to sufficient quantities of affordable, nutritious food. 18 campus and community organizations will be tabling at Anisq’Oyo’ Park in Isla Vista so everyone can learn more about and get involved in food security-related efforts at UCSB and in I.V.

The event will include food distribution from the Associated Students Food Bank and I.V. Food Co-Op, live performances from student artists, speeches by food justice researchers and activists, and food related activities! CalFresh representatives will also be present to answer questions and assist with students’ applications.
