Isla Vista Common Table: The Beloved Community
The Beloved Community of Isla Vista, a community building initiative spearheaded by Associated Students at UCSB in collaboration with Isla Vista community and campus leaders, will be hosting the Isla Vista Common Table: The Beloved Community on Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 12:00pm-2:00pm at People’s Park in Isla Vista, in partnership with the Lois & Walter Capps Project.
For the five year anniversary of the May 23rd tragedy, we invite all community members to join us to break bread. Sitting down for a meal together is one of the most fundamental ways to bridge divisions and build community. It is a basic starting point toward deeper understanding and relationship-building. No speeches, no politics, no awards, just food and conversation and the opportunity to contemplate together what a Beloved Community looks and feels like in Isla Vista.

BACKGROUND OF THE BELOVED COMMUNITY ISLA VISTA
The last five years have been a pivotal period in the history of Isla Vista, marked by the tragedy of May 23, 2014 which created a great sense of urgency and momentum to work together for our collective future and the future of Isla Vista. Out of these efforts “The Beloved Community” was born to create a space in which we can engage with each other about the issues that matter in Isla Vista, strengthen a culture of sharing by engaging in community-wide dialogue, education and action that allows us to explore our unique perspectives on how we got to this crucial time in the history of Isla Vista and where we go from here.
2019 May Day Festival!
5/4 11am-5pm
People’s Park IV
Hey, leftist troublemakers in the 805!
Come celebrate past and present student and worker organizing at the 2019 MAY DAY FESTIVAL!
The theme of this year’s Festival is “COUNTDOWN TO REVOLT: WORKERS AND STUDENTS UNITE!” All too often, the radical history of IV and UCSB go unrecognized: our campus and community have witnessed everything from a bank burning to student and military occupations to the creation of alternative educational programs, economic associations, and political institutions that still serve us today.
This year, we want to reclaim, revive, and build upon these long legacies of resistance, solidarity, and autonomy, which truly exemplify the spirit of May Day. Together with all of your favorite campus and community organizations, Bonfire will be hosting a day-long festival with lots of BOOKS, GAMES, TALKS, and PERFORMANCES.
If you want to be inspired by all the ways in which UCSB and IV have thrown down with the authorities in the past, if you want to get plugged into local leftist organizing, if you want to enjoy great political conversations in even better company… head to PEOPLE’S PARK on SATURDAY, MAY 4.
For accessibility, we will have food tables and chairs. Parking nearby can be tight, and we encourage carpooling and use of buses. For those who are in need of more accessible parking, let us know and we can point you to a campus lot and reimburse your parking pass.
Save the date, and tell your friends and comrades!
Let the countdown begin!
