The Freak Power Ticket

This coming Wednesday, May 23rd, marks the four-year anniversary of that sad day that saw six UCSB students killed in Isla Vista and over a dozen wounded.

As the nation reels from the latest school shooting on Friday at Santa Fe High School in Texas, we confront the awful fact that there have been 22 incidents of gun violence on school grounds during the 20 weeks of this calendar year. That is, more than one per week in 2018.

https://www.cnn.com/…/school-shootings-2018-list…/index.html

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in Parkland, Florida sparked one of the greatest youth-activist mobilizations in this country since the Vietnam War, culminating two months ago with March for our Lives demonstrations throughout the United States.

We’ll devote the next hourlong edition of “The FPT” on KCSB-FM 91.9 in Santa Barbara to songs supporting sensible gun-control laws and these social-justice advocates — and protest music attacking white supremacy, misogyny and sexual violence, militarism, right-wing, 2nd Amendment hysteria, and the NRA.

“We call BS” on such propaganda and the political refusal to take action to protect our children — and each of us — from random acts of gun violence. As the students of Parkland made loud and clear, thoughts and prayers are not nearly enough.

“The Freak Power Ticket” airs on Mondays in the spring from 11am-12noon PDT.

Sadly, Alexandra Meallet will no longer be part of Associated Students. Alexandra has been involved in Associated Students and the community for many years and was working as a UCIV Program Coordinator since November. She was a great addition to the team and we will miss her. We wish her all the best in her future life!
