Associated Students Statement of Solidarity
January 30, 2017
To the Student Body,
On January 27th, 2017, President Trump signed an Executive Order that potentially restricts movement of UCSB students, faculty and staff returning from abroad to our community. The Associated Students stands with these members of our community. We understand that many in our community are frightened and confused by this action by the federal government, an action that Associated Students vehemently opposes.
In the coming week, Associated Students Executives will be looking to match resources to needs in our community. We are committed to supporting students’ actions, such as the protest organized on January 30th by concerned UCSB students and community members. As an executive team we encourage such student actions and lend our office’s support for future events. Our immediate concern is to identify any student, faculty or staff whose travel back to the United States is affected. The Office for International Students and Scholars has been working with all students in need of assistance. Associated Students is also preparing its resources to help support any student in need of further assistance.
Your Executive team is also preparing for any future executive orders that may affect our student population, specifically our most vulnerable populations. Our Executive team will seek commitments from the University Administration to protect the identities and information of susceptible communities targeted by federal agencies.
We understand that these are trying times, but we want our community to know that we see you, we hear you, and we are listening.
Please refer to the resources listed below (though this list is not exhaustive) and please reach out to us to address your concerns:
