Senate FAQ

The Associated Students Senate is a group of elected representatives which serves as the policy-making body of Associated Students. As a governing body, we strive to open lines of communication between students, the administration, and our greater community. Members of the Senate seek to be proactive in addressing student needs and providing and facilitating services and resources that enhance the UCSB experience.

How can I speak during a Senate meeting?

The agenda is set up where time for announcements will be first followed by public forum. To speak, please make sure you arrive to the meeting on time and feel free to walk up to the podium at any time during announcements or public forum, whatever is more appropriate. You will have 2 minutes to speak with time for questions and answers afterward.

When and where are the Senate meetings held?

Meetings are usually held on Wednesdays starting at 6:30pm in the Flying A Room of the University Center (Main Floor). No meetings will be held during Week 10 (Dead Week) or during Finals Week unless a special meeting is called. Please refer to announcements on the home page or dates on the agenda page for an updated list of meeting dates.

What do the agendas consist of?

Agendas have a place for announcements and public forum, as well as reports from committees in Associated Students and from around campus. The Executive Director and Executive Officers also have time to make reports. After accepting the agenda, minutes from committees are approved followed by action items, old business, then new business. The meeting wraps up with time for discussion, representative reports, and final remarks.

How can I place an item on the agenda?

If you would like to place anything on the agenda, whether it’s a presentation you would like to give, an allocation of funds, or to place a bill or resolution, please email the Internal Vice President at internalvp@as.ucsb.edu to coordinate an agenda item. Anything to be placed on the agenda must be submitted no later than 11am of the Tuesday prior to the Wednesday meeting.

Who sits on Senate/ What is Senate made up of?

The Council has 24 representatives and is chaired by the Internal Vice President for Associated Students. There are 6 Representatives at Large (represent 3,000 students each), 12 Off Campus Representatives (represent 1,000 off campus students each), 5 On Campus Representatives (represent 1,000 on campus students each), and 1 University Owned Housing Representative (represent 1,000 students living in university owned apartments). These representatives are elected by students during week 4 of spring quarter.
