Fernando Ramirez - Student Action Coalition

Hello, my name is Fernando Ramirez and I am a 3rd year Political Science and Chicana/o Studies major. Currently, I am Chair of Student Lobby, which has been fighting against the budget cuts and also serve as chair of the A.S. Finance Board, which oversees the entire 2.8 million dollar Associated Students budget. I am also a member of El Congreso, the Student Commission on Racial Equality, serve on the University's Admissions committee and sit on the board of the Isla Vista Recreation and Park District. On a state and national level I have been active with the University of California Student Association and serve as a consultant to the United States Student Association. When elected I will focus on: 1. Holding all University and Associated Students entities accountable and responsible for the effective use of student fees. 2. Lobby against the proposed 10% increase in student fees, the decrease in financial aid, and the elimination of state outreach funding. 3. Work towards getting a student vote in all academic departments. Since my freshman year I have dedicated my time to the student movement by lobbying in Cheadle Hall, Sacramento and Capitol Hill. Allow me to continue my work on student issues in the president's office. Vote SAC, Taking Action, Attaining Access! Visit our website for more information www.voteSAC.com.

Cervin "Curve" Morris - Students' Party
Dear Students of UCSB,

I am currently a Representative at Large for A.S. Legislative Council and am now running for A.S. President with Students' Party for the upcoming year. In my term on legislative council I've spent much of my time learning about how Associated Students functions as a student organization. There are endless ways that students can become involved to create positive change within their community. Sadly, not that many students know enough about A.S.: the effort to reach out to more students has been neglected by our representatives. This past year we've had a tremendous problem concerning appointed positions within A.S. and our inability to notify a large portion of student applicants about interviews. This absolutely distresses me. Every student at least deserves a chance. I personally will see to it that next year's legislative council reaches out more to the students instead of waiting for them to come to us.

I am strongly against the current proposal of the Isla Vista PAC to charge students $195.00 a year to park their cars on the streets of I.V. That's ridiculous! Students should have more influence on committees such as PAC. Aside from working to keep student representation in the UCSB community high and fee increases low, I plan to develop an executive committee on university outreach that is going to specifically work on grant writing and fund raising through our A.S. grant writer and Business Services. With all that said: Vote Students' Party, Cervin Morris for President.

Internal Vice President

candidate
Courtney Schroeder - Student Action Coalition

What's going on people, my name is Courtney Schroeder and I am running for Internal Vice President. For the past three years at UCSB I have been working for the students. Helping fight initiatives like Prop 54 but also serving my community through several student organizations. From Gaucho Toastmasters to Black Student Union I have been working with students to create a stronger community and increased student involvement.

I am running with Student Action Coalition because of their strong history of advocating for student rights and commitment to their goals.

Persistence. This is one of the most valuable skills when trying to create change. I am excited about the opportunity to represent the students' needs.

Understanding that the state is going through a budget crisis, I will push to ensure that the UC priority of affordable quality education for everyone is met. In order to do this I will lobby to save outreach programs that have proven to be successful and at the same time push to stop the increase in student fees.

As Internal Vice President, one of my priorities would be to increase the number of students involved in student government and raise the level of student awareness about what Associated Students has to offer. I am also looking forward to ensuring that our campus continues to take steps to be environmentally friendly.

I would like to challenge all students who are not apart of a student organization to do so. Change comes through student organizing.

candidate
Travis Heard - Student Unity Now

Like movies, lectures, concerts and special events? If so, I hope that you have taken advantage of one of the many events that Program Board has put on this year. The eclectic mix of involvement, from overseeing the A.S. Program Board to working as an EMT for UCSB ambulance, and leading as the president of my fraternity, has given me a great foundation that I may apply to the position of Internal Vice President. My involvement with numerous student organizations and administrations has been directed towards cutting down the bureaucratic red tape that seems to plague our university. The same drive and passion that I have put into Program Board, is the same energy that fuels Student Unity Now. My goal this year on Program Board and next year as Internal Vice President, will be to provide the necessary resources to accomplish whatever it is you and your student organization want to achieve. From funding to lobbying, I can provide the contacts that are necessary to transfer your aspirations into concrete events and progress. I will be a solid and equitable resource for all students by providing the strongest path to get from planning to success, no matter what that might entail. The experiences that add to your education here are invaluable and I want to provide a better framework to enrich and increase such experiences. I ask you to allow me the opportunity to serve you as a source of knowledge and experience in the Legislative Council for next year. For more info visit votesun.com

External Vice President, Local Affairs

candidate
Corina M. Garcia - Student Action Coalition

What's up everyone, my name is Corina Garcia and I am a Chicana Studies and Political Science major. My membership in the Student Action Coalition, numerous groups within Associated Students, and most importantly my officer position in El Congreso, have reminded me to think critically and consciously of my political surroundings, as well as the necessary ways to progressively change them. The leadership and organizational skills obtained through my community involvement have further enhanced by ability to effectively practice and foster the necessary leadership to bring about real change among legislative council representatives, the local UCSB communities and in our communities at large.

My involvement in the local "No on Proposition 54" campaign, as well as the campaign to bring resources to the Isla Vista community has helped me establish myself within a strong group of political organizers with the interest of bringing representation through organization to underrepresented communities, as well as communities in need of sustainable access.

When elected I will continue to bridge the gap among Isla Vista issues concerning all students and local community members. It is absolutely necessary to utilize our current resources and hold our local officials accountable. I will work to bring all communities together make Isla Vista more reflective of the progressive political movements on our UCSB campus.

Therefore, we must all Vote SAC, Taking Action Attaining Access. "The power is in the people and the politics we address"

candidate
Soumil Mehta - Student Unity Now

As your External VP for Local Affairs, I will bring a passionate, progressive and principled voice to UCSB and the Isla Vista community. As the Outreach Chair of Environmental Affairs Board, I have developed professional relationships with UCSB Administration, IV Master Plan and IV Parking Permit agencies, and various community organizations. I will also harness the knowledge gained and relationships developed by my active membership in AS BIKES and my experience as Manley House President and Treasurer to open communication channels between students and community organizations to represent students starting at the beginning of the planning process all the way to implementation. At the same time, I will draw on my experience to watch over institutions that have a powerful hand in determining our future to ensure that decisions affecting us are socially equitable, fiscally responsible, ecologically sustainable, and beneficial to students now and in the future. Also, I will hold public forums and active listening sessions on campus and in Isla Vista to give all students the opportunity to be heard and engage in interactive dialogue. I will devote myself to the greater student interest with special attention to tenants' rights, weekend student safety, car share program, improved bus service, and biker safety. As the External Vice President of Local Affairs I will do my best to serve the needs of every student at UCSB, and other members of the Isla Vista community. For more info visit votesun.com

candidate
Jared Renfro - Students' Party

Involvement: As a second year legislative council representative and current member of Associated Students' Business Services, Program Board, I have developed the leadership skills required to be Executive Vice President for Local Affairs (EVPLA). I have written bills and position papers, helped coordinate large student socials such as the A.S. BBQ, and am currently developing the Business Services entrepreneur competition. My main objective as EVPLA is to promote policies that enhance safety and responsibility while protecting students' rights. I will work with the Committee on Public Safety to create a student-based oversight committee of UCPD and IVFP to protect students' rights.

Progress: I.V. needs to implement feasible plans that will address the long-term problems: parking impacted by increased density, housing quality, and the quality of student life. I am opposed to the parking permit program that would require residents of Isla Vista to pay $195.00 for a permit to park their car. Students are already encumbered with the rising tuition, high rent, and overpriced textbooks. The plan fails to address the real parking issue in I.V.: the demand to supply more parking spaces as I.V.'s population grows.

Good Times: I am opposed to Halloween's Outdoor Festival Ordinance that restricts amplified music from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. I have researched with Business Services the possibility of creating a student-operated pub on campus. The creation of this Business Service would provide a safe and responsible environment for students and faculty to relax and socialize. Go green on 420: Vote Students' Party.

External Vice President, Statewide

candidate
Andrew Thomas - Student Unity Now

Go Gauchos!! That's the message I wish to bring to Sacramento. The office of Statewide Affairs is a vital asset to the representation of your rights, your opinions, and your school. The UC Regents, one of the institutions that determine the direction of your money, your education, and your experience at UCSB, has increased student fees and tuition for every Gaucho and reduced or eliminated vital services like student outreach and scholarships. UCSB students deserve to have a say in where their money goes and why. And this is my mission- to bring to you sincere and loyal representation of your interests and make sure your voice is heard above the din of bureaucratic penny-pinching. My office will work with the Regents to ensure that they start responding to the interests of Gauchos. I will work for your desire to see greener buildings on all UC campuses, and I will push for system-wide implementation and use of environmentally friendly energy resources. I will fight for support from the state for important interest groups representing women, minorities, queer, and other student groups that deserve a strong champion of Gaucho diversity. As an athlete, an IV tenant and a student, I feel that I have worked with a diverse group of students, with a wide range of concerns that I will address at the state level through the UC Student Association. Most importantly, I will make myself available to hear your concerns, grievances, and wants. I want to bring everyone's voice together to give UCSB a powerful influence in statewide affairs. candidate
Felicia Cruz - Students' Party

My name is Felicia Cruz and I am STUDENTS' PARTY candidate for External Vice President of Statewide Affairs (EVPSA). If elected, I will ensure that our voice is heard at a statewide and national level. My involvement in Associated Students has given me the experience needed to handle the jobs and duties required of EVPSA. I am currently a Representative at Large elected to Associated Students Legislative Council. Through this I have become greatly involved in Student Commission on Racial Equality and Student Lobby. As a woman and as a person that was once physically disabled I am committed to the issues of these communities. I believe that our student voice is essential at a statewide level but in order to do this we must coordinate all students dissatisfied with the status quo. Furthermore, we must continue to pursue and ensure that our demands are met on our campus by the UC Regents. Currently, I have been the forerunner of the campaign against OSL's Parental Notification policy. Not only I but also STUDENTS' PARTY is greatly committed to seeing this policy eradicated. We must continue to hold rallies and lobby our Regents but at the same time develop plans that offer an alternative solution to the problems we are addressing. A Vote for STUDENTS' PARTY is a Vote for You. Felicia Cruz for External Vice President of Statewide Affairs. Vote Students' Party.

Representatives-at-Large

candidate
Danielle Lesure - Students' Party

What's up UCSB students! My name is Danielle Lesure and I am a first year student seeking the office of Associated Students' Representative at Large with Students' Party. I have years of leadership experience prior to attending UCSB and I feel that it is time to implement those skills within my collegiate community. One of my goals, along with my fellow Students' Party members, is to increase student awareness and involvement with Associated Students' affairs so that you, the students, will have more influence on the issues. In addition, I am passionate about preventing a fee for residents to park in Isla Vista. With the help of the members of my party I aim to create a fun and safe collegiate environment. Make the right choice. Vote Students' Party.

candidate
Rodolfo "Rudy" Lopez - Student Action Coalition

The wise and non-violent activist Mahatma Gandhi once said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." My name is Rodolfo (Rudy) Lopez and I am a first year student at UCSB. I strongly carry Gandhi's idea close to my heart because I also believe that there is no way social change can be made without people fighting for it. Arriving to UCSB I looked around and was astonished to see that the diversity on this campus seemed to be very little. I wanted to know where all the people of color went. The demographics on this campus did not match the ideas that inequality and oppression were things of the past, which have always been echoed throughout my life. As representative at large I will work towards diversifying our campus by bringing awareness of the importance of higher education to our youth. I will also work on stopping the proposed fee increase that would make education much harder to obtain. I will work collectively with other organizations to make this a safe and progressive environment for women, the queer community, and people of color. Change is only attainable through perseverance and devotion and freedom is non-existent unless everyone is free. VoteSAC.com, Taking Action, Attaining Access.

Nicole Sonquist - Student Unity Now

We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and are so fortunate to live here. I should know because I've lived here my whole life. What's up, UCSB? My name is Nicole Sonquist and I am running as an At-Large Student Representative for the S.U.N. party. As a third year here at UCSB, I am ready to face the challenges that lie ahead for our campus and to help grow, develop, and continue as on of the top universities in the world. The more time I spend with members of the S.U.N. party I realize how many amazing people want to be involved and really make a difference. In addition, we have the most experienced, fun loving and compassionate President and Vice-Presidents that you will see running for Legislative Council. That is precisely why I am here. I want to see what we can do to see that our AMAZING coastline preserved. I want a stronger and more unified student body. Let's see what we can do about giving a louder voice to the women's organizations on campus. I would like to see emphasis in the arts and more recognition for student art. And most importantly, let's improve the lines of communication that we have at this school and bridge the gap between all group identities on this campus. Vote Student Unity Now, and let's begin the process of making UCSB a foundation of success for all of us. Visit www.votesun.com.

candidate
Selyna Perez - Students' Party

Listen up Gauchos! My name is Selyna Perez and I am running for Representative at Large for the Students' Party. I have served as a proxy on legislative council for two quarters and I am very familiar with the structure of Associated Students. I am also an individual dedicated to Outreach programs. I am a current employee of EOP and will be involved in the Upward Bound program which encourages first-generation, low-income high school students to attend a university and pursue college in the future. I am also involved in Student Lobby which is a group dedicated to fighting for the rights and voice of students. I am a committed, persevering individual dedicated to making a difference within the UCSB community. I enjoy interacting with all types of people and working hard to achieve my goals. I believe I have the energy and leadership skills to get things done on campus. So let's organize and take action! Vote Students' Party 2004.

candidate
Alina Akram - Students' Party

My name is Alina Akram; I am running for Rep @ Large with Students' Party. As an all-around responsible and hard working student, I plan on taking advantage of such a position and doing all that I can to improve situations for UCSB's students both on campus and in Isla Vista. Being first exposed to A.S. in my second year, I feel that it is more of an exclusive organization, not always welcoming to all students. Therefore, I plan on making it a point to help get students involved, in order for them to gain the most from their student government. I would also like to see UCSB's culturally diverse community gain better representation in A.S. and coming from an underrepresented group, I believe that I can help accomplish this. I plan on dealing with issues that not only affect all UCSB students as a whole, but issues that are important to those underrepresented students as well. With Student's Party I know that these issues and many more will not only be addressed, but also taken care of. Vote Students' Party!!!

Jessica Lozano - Student Action Coalition
"I have no mouth. And I must scream."
- H. Ellison

The University of California belongs to those who study in it. As students, we need to have our voices heard in order to let the University know what we want from it. My name is Jessica Lozano, and I'm running for Representative at Large. If elected I will ensure that all student demands and concerns be heard by the University. When you need to scream, I shall be the mouth through which you'll be able to do it.

Have you ever wondered what your academic department is doing inside its enclosed walls? As a major, you should not be left in the dark. You should be informed of all actions taken by the department, voice your opinions, and make them count. OFFICIALLY. The Student Action Coalition has extended this to all departments and is determined to establish an official student vote in all academic departments.

In addition, as an active member of one of the oldest and progressive organizations on campus, El Congreso, I have worked in solidarity with a number of campus groups such as Women's Commission and I.V. Tenants Union, as well as with non-campus groups like PUEBLO. I am currently working on bringing I.V. families and UCSB students together to form coalitions in order to address common concerns such as decent rent and living conditions in Isla Vista.

My main goal is to represent the general student body both on and off campus, and to help run an efficient student government that will address student needs. If elected, I will not only continue to work on forming I.V. family and UCSB student coalitions and to establish a student vote in all academic departments, I will also work on addressing issues that are dear to me and many of you. This includes women and environmental issues, racial equality, among others.

So if you feel that you have no mouth and you need to scream...let me be the outlet through which you will be able to do so.

candidate
Jasmine Vance - Student Action Coalition

What is a place where every face you see looks like your own? My name is Jasmine Vance and I am running with the Student Action Coalition for Representative at Large. The pressing issues that I believe need to be addressed are outreach and diversity. It is imperative that we have representatives of every race, creed and color here at UCSB so that we can potentially learn from one anther and our cultures. I am currently a member of Akanke, I am also an African American Cultural Intern with EOP, and worked with the African American student outreach program in 2003. It is important to me that the concerns that you have are brought to the entire student government. So I will work hard, along with the rest of the SAC team, to ensure that your voice is heard. So when you vote, Vote SAC. It is a vote for diversity, community, and action. Taking Action, Attaining Success!

candidate
Yvonne Tran - Student Action Coalition

Hello! My name is Yvonne Tran, a communications and law & society major. You know changes need to be made at our school, you know what those changes are, but find it difficult to communicate it to anyone, well frankly, I am your gal! I am running for Rep-at-Large with the Student Action Coalition because I understand the importance of representation when it comes to the issues you care about. Like the overcrowding of university classes. The frustration of crashing a 101 course with 170 students for 100 seats can leave anyone feeling irate. And that is WHY I strongly oppose the budget cuts to education, which is compromising our future. For the past three years I have been involved with a statewide racial justice organization and currently serving on the board of directors. Thus I know what it takes to diversify our school and make the needed changes. I am here to represent YOU. So don't be shy, communicate! VoteSAC.com, Taking Action Attaining Access. E-mail me at Athenagoddess@umail.ucsb.edu

candidate
Jason Everitt - Students' Party

My name is Jason Everitt and I am a second-year Political Science major running for Representative at Large for the STUDENTS' PARTY. I am the President of the Inter-fraternity Council and a founding father and President of my own fraternity. I currently represent the interests of 1600 students distributed amongst 20 Greek organizations. I also serve the students of UCSB as Attorney General. I bring actual experience with Associated Students, an uncommon attribute in the field of candidates, as well as experience representing large numbers of students and initiating programs to their benefit. There are a lot of things I'd like to do as part of Legislative Council. At present, I'm working with the Women's Center and associated groups to supply students with Date Rape Drink Test Strips as a means to combat rape and sexual assault. I'd also like to strengthen the business services of Associated Students so that the budget crisis doesn't limit the amount of money we can spend on student groups and student-sponsored programming. I think that the experience I have as part of Associated Students and students groups combined with a genuine interest in being involved and helping students would make me a great candidate for Representative at Large and Legislative Council. STUDENTS PARTY is all about helping every student. We want people to know what their student government does for them, from stopping sexual assault and keeping parking free in IV to throwing barbecues and concerts. If you want more good times, STUDENTS PARTY.

candidate
Christine Lai - Student Unity Now

Dedication. Passion. Serving YOU! Associated Students is the student body of UCSB and it is my goals to make it more accessible and show what resources you have at your disposal as a fellow Gaucho. As a Representative-at-Large, I will be your voice at Legislative Council meetings and will make it a point to open up A.S. to be yours! This past year I have served as the Vice-Chair on Academic Affairs Board where it has been one of my goals to create more majors and minors, and a Student Representative on the Academic Senate for Student Affairs where I have worked with administration and faculty to bridge the communication gap between students and staff, and I want to continue to ensure that your concerns and needs are met. Through this position on Legislative Council, I wish to make A.S. an organization that is friendly and welcoming in creating an atmosphere that embraces all students while representing all students. Student Unity Now represents you and is driven by the most hardworking and experienced students. Make your vote count and VOTE SUN and CHRISTINE for Rep-at-Large! Taking Action and Attaining Access: this is the role and direction SAC will continue to take as your student leadership. My name is Kelly Burns and I am running for Rep at Large to advocate and represent your needs. I am a first year Political Science and Global Studies major, I have already acquired experience by becoming active in as many issues as possible. I am currently the Multi Cultural Chair of Executive Council for Anacapa. This year I was active in the Governor recall campaign and Prop 54. I was also an intern and a block leader for the March Supervisor Campaign. I have been active in voter registration, worked with Student Lobby and Campus Democrats, and I have co-sponsored legislation with the current party. I believe student government should help each individual have the greatest possible impact to ensure that there is a connection between public opinion and legislative action. If elected, I plan to work with the Environmental Affairs Board and Student Lobby to continue making UCSB take influential steps toward social justice and environmental issues. I feel it is important to represent and protect people of all ethnicities and backgrounds tearing down barriers and uniting everyone to work together. It is also important to ensure your trust in us to monitor and fight for student needs such as preventing tuition increase. Vote for Kelly Burns for Rep At Large! candidate
Kristen Ditlevsen - Students' Party

My name is Kristen Ditlevsen. I'm running for reelection as a Rep At-Large on Legislative Council. Last year I ran with SAC but after a year in office I have chosen to run again with a new party - one with clear objectives, attainable goals, and people who want to make positive change for students at UCSB: Students' Party. I have spent the last year working to improve and expand the services offered by the A.S. Legal Resource Center and serve the students in Isla Vista by building dialogue between students, policy makers, and law enforcement through the A.S. Commission on Public Safety. Through my position I have continually taken a stand for students' freedom of choice and defended their right to privacy in the face of policies such as Parental Notification. In the coming year I will continue to work on my long term goal of developing the Legal Resource Center so that students can be fully represented in all legal matters. I want to keep organizing meetings for students, police officers, and school administration to talk about Isla Vista issues and increase the role that students have in shaping the policies that affect their school and their home. An active student voice is critical to maintain students' rights on campus and in I.V. So when elections roll around remember to vote Students' Party: Your choice. Your voice.

candidate
Kavita Kapur - Student Action Coalition

My name is Kavita Kapur and I'm a first year Environmental Studies major. This year I became actively involved with Indus and took part in representing the South-Asian diversity of UCSB on both a state and national level. Through my experiences, I have come to understand that our campus is a diverse one, not only in background, but in intellect and thought as well. If elected as a Representative at Large, I will work to facilitate discussion and cooperation within the different groups on campus. I will organize debates between the various political organizations in order to provide a non-partisan political awareness to all students. I will work with Student Lobby to ensure that UCSB students utilize the powerful voice of higher education. As a member of the Student Action Coalition, I will represent people of color, the environmentally conscious, the queer community, low-income groups, and all UCSB students. Together, we will continue to support the California Student Sustainability Coalition and work towards building a more sustainable future for this campus. We will work to facilitate better interaction between students and academic departments as well as administrators, to ensure that the quality and accessibility of education are the highest priorities. So remember, vote for SAC because as Dr. Seuss once wrote, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." Vote SAC: Taking Action, Attaining Access.

I am a second year Cultural Anthropology major and Global Peace and Security Minor, and I hope to be your rep at large for the 2004-2005 year. My past leadership experience includes working for the Residence Hall Association as a hall council president, an intern for the Housing Department, and this year as the RHA administrative Vice President. Outside of RHA I have served as a rep to AS Program Board and OSL's Alternative Social Programming Committee. If elected I will work towards better communication and cooperation amongst student groups in order to create a more united UCSB community. I will continue to serve as an advocate for the protection of open spaces and greenery around campus and engage in dialogue with the university to create environmental friendly "green" buildings. From my experiences with different safety agencies on campus I am aware of the issues facing our campus and will work towards creating a safer UCSB for all students. Based on all of these different experiences with leadership organizations and my interactions with various campus administrators, I am familiar with how the university system functions, and how to get the best out of it for you, the students. So come April 20th, remember to vote on GOLD for Jonathan Clotworthy for Representative at Large

Kelly Finnerty - Student Unity Now

UCSB offers oodles of services and fun events that oftentimes we students miss because of poor communication between the administration and the student body. Our gigantic student population makes it easy for us to do what is convenient and familiar, but we are actually missing out on many great opportunities. For example, did you know that UCSB students are entitled to a lawyer by the school? Expanding the knowledge of these resources is one of the major reasons I want to be a part of Legislative Council and one reason why I am part of Students Unite Now (S*U*N). As Representative at Large I would be readily available to listen to your needs and find suitable solutions to your problems. UCSB is an amazing school and I look forward to only making it better. Let me represent you and I will work hard to make the school's system facilitate you! For more info please visit votesun.com.

Marcus Duarte-Smith - Students' Party

Hello, my name is Marcus Duarte Smith and I am running for Rep. at Large with Students' Party. I am a second year philosophy major. I will bring a change to the current A.S. government; this is my first time running for an A.S. position. The Students' Party is dedicated to reaching out to the students and giving back to the community. This is why we support more functions such as: bbq's before sport's games and other events, fighting the tuition increases and providing more events for students to interact with one another. These student-initiated issues and activities would be in addition to the operating functions of student government. We are a party for all, fresh on the scene, open to all who'll roll with us.

"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty." - Winston Churchill

As a candidate for office, I recognize the challenge that lies ahead. However, my goal is to face these challenges head on with an optimistic attitude. There will be change. My name is Joanna Thomas and I am running for the office of Off-Campus Representative. I am a freshman English major. Though I have been a student at UCSB for a mere two quarters, I serve as an active part of the student body. Through my involvement in different groups on campus and an adamant desire for social change, I plan to continue my work towards equality. In order for progress, we need more interaction between differing groups on campus. To make significant changes for diversity on UCSB's campus as a whole, our individual communities must come together and strategize change. Outreach is the key. Let us make our campus available to all students. To achieve these goals it is necessary for UCSB students to build a coalition amongst themselves and with other UC students statewide. An unified force, undivided by cultural differences held together with a bond; educational equality. Vote S.A.C.! Taking Action Attaining Access.

candidate
Alonja Green - Student Action Coalition

Say It Loud: My name is Alonja Green, and I am running for Off-Campus Representative under the dynamic Student Action Coalition, the only inclusive progressive party! I am a first year biology major. I am currently the Secretary for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). I am a Student Representative on the Intercollegiate Athletics Policy Board. I participated in the Proactive Leadership Development Program, which allowed me to network with campus higher power, and various student services and organizations. I attended this years National Student Lobby Conference in Washington D.C. There I met with our district Representative to address issues that are not only affecting us and our campus, but students across the country. I am a firm believer in planning and taking organized action; taking in the interest and opinions of others and working towards victory. My central objective is to collaborate with you students and listen to your concerns and do my ultimate best to ensure that those concerns are heard and that action is taken to address those concerns. I will work to improve campus communication through coalition forming and keeping you all informed of what is taking place on your campus. Having a voice is one thing, but having a loud voice will reach the ears of all. Vote S.A.C. and your voice will be heard loud and clear. Vote Student Action Coalition. Taking Action Attaining Access.

Ivan Montes Rosales - Student Action Coalition

My name is Ivan Rosales and currently a second year student. As a continuing student I have had the opportunity to see how this institution runs. I am a strong believer in helping those in need, maintaining a green environment, and giving back to the community. I would not be here if it was not for the many people who have helped me along the way, so I take it upon myself to do the same; to help our neighbors who lack the resources to become successful. Currently I am a member and public relations chair of La Escuelita, an organization that is dedicated in aiding our communities by offering tutoring, many times bilingual tutoring in our local schools. We try to enrich the education of the youth and ultimately motivate them to pursue and attend an institution of higher learning. Through La Escuelita, I have built the self-confidence and the organization skills, which are key as for a Legislative Council member. As an I.V representative I will work to build a positive and supportive community by establishing a strong line of communication and awareness, to ensure that our concerns as residents of the Isla Vista community are heard and attained.

Maegan Sinclair - Student Action Coalition

One day I was talking to someone about SAC's goals for the next school year. I was telling her about all that SAC wanted to accomplish and she became really excited. She really believed in a lot of the issues that we have dealt with in the past and plan on dealing with in the future. She had wanted to tackle some of our issues but never knew how to go about it. That is exactly what SAC does and what I plan to do once I am elected. I will be the voice of the people and fight for the injustices that many underrepresented groups face. I want to deal with the fact that minority enrollment is decreasing and that no one wants to do anything about it. How our student fees are increasing, yet they are trying to eliminate things like C.L.A.S. and E.O.P that are there to help us. We are all students here at UCSB. This school would not exist if it weren't for us. Shouldn't we have some say in what goes on here? These reasons and many more are why I think you should vote for me and the other members in the Student Action Coalition. "Student Action. Attaining Access"

candidate
Adriana Wianecki - Students' Party

What up people? I'm Adriana Wianecki, running for Off-Campus Representative with Students' Party. You may remember me from such places as the San Miguel front desk, the streets of Isla Vista, wandering around campus or in the back row of one of your classes. I would love the opportunity to represent you on next year's legislative council. I want to make sure the student body is informed about issues that concern them. Not enough people know how to get involved with Associated Students. This is a major problem. If A.S. does not try reach out to each and every student on campus, then they're not fulfilling their duty of unifying the population. I will bring an open mind to each meeting and consideration of new ideas. Being a member of leg-council will help me to inform A.S. about your ideas, and what you would like to see within the university system. The students' party represents diversity and the embracement of all students who are interested in participating. I'll make sure your ideas get heard, and make sure you know what's going on around here. I'm here to represent you; it's your campus and you should no longer be left in the dark about how it's run. Vote Adriana Wianecki for off-campus rep. because I say "It's not really a party unless the student body knows about it." Just remember: there ain't no party like Students' Party 'cause the Students' Party won't stop. Working for you, that is.

Megan Slocum - Student Unity Now

I would like to serve you on legislative Council. I understand that we should unite the Univeristy of California and other public schools in order to solve the problems we are facing. Students are having to pay more, and get less, and this is a problem. By collaborating and uniting with the parties on campus, and with other school, I believe that our voice can be heard and our goals can be accomplished. On legislative council I plan to make this happen with various resolutions that unite our school and send a message to others. Additionally, at UCSB I would like to help protect our coastal environment. I am interested in these issues and more, but most importantly in representing your voice when working towards these goals.

candidate
Elise Hennigan - Student Unity Now

I understand that being a part of Associated Students at UCSB takes much work and dedication. I want my voice and the voices of others to be heard. As a member of S.U.N. I believe that more funding and efforts should go to student organizations. There are also many other issues on our campus that I think are important such as no tuition increases and a greener UCSB campus. Not only do I believe that these issues are important, I plan to work to take effective action to make my vision shown on campus. I am ready and willing to serve as a voice for the students of UCSB and I have the commitment that it takes to be a truly valuable representative.

candidate
Brenda Walsh - Student Unity Now

I have a sincere desire to represent each individual that makes up UCSB's diverse student body. I want to be your voice on each and every issue. Specifically, I will work hard to keep student fees and costs from increasing as well as push for a greener and more energy efficient campus. I love being a part of this amazing community and my desire to keep improving it will show through as one of your Associated Students Off-Campus Representatives.

candidate
Samuel "Sam The Man" Giles - League Of Independent Candidates

I have a great deal of experience in student government, having been an active member of ASB for the past seven years. A few of the positions I have held are Treasurer, Historian, Rally Commissioner and President. I also have received other leadership accolades including Student Mentor of the Year, the Student-Athlete Award, and various leadership awards. I currently am a 1st year honors student with sophomore status majoring in political science, international emphasis, and will soon add the double major of Global Studies. Recently, I was the first write-in candidate in UCSB history to be elected as a Resident Hall President, where I work with RHA, my Executive Board, and my San Nicholas Hall Council to promote a healthy and fun college experience for students living in the Residence Halls and all students in general. I am looking forward to holding the position of Off-Campus Representative in order to promote benefits for my fellow off-campus students. After recent experience with election procedures, I hope to work on communication and relationships between off-campus students, campus organizations and events, and also community boards and organizations. I am eager to run without a party, only a League of three Independent Candidates. Having observed party groups, I feel we can bypass traditional organization and make more efficient use of resources in order to promote further cooperation and coordination among students and the campus community. This is work that I feel is most useful to be invested back into the students. As an alternative to party commitments, I feel I am able to hold office and vote for the students, not for a party. In this election I trust the student body to elect for individual candidate leadership and quality rather than for a party.

candidate
Christopher Fontanesi - Student Unity Now

All too often conflict drives the political spirit. Decisions made tend to represent that conflict instead of properly representing the cooperative atmosphere that our school promotes. This open-minded approach to decision making needs to be placed at the heart of the UCSB political environment. The students need to be represented by candidates who promote not only their ideas but also their cooperative ideals.

I will promote a cooperative atmosphere under which decisions will be reached communally. I want to increase the accessibility of the AS to the students by providing more channels, which we can find opportunities for both personal enrichment and community involvement. I will work with the California Student Sustainability Coalition to bring sustainable education, transportation and buildings to all UC's. The promotion of a greener, environmentally sound camps will provide lasting beautiful future for UCSB.

The work that must be done needs to be representative of the students, for the benefit of the student population as a whole. The commonality of our plights as students supercedes our individual differences. Increased tuition, master planning for IV, and funding concerns students as a group, and the deliberation process on such important issues needs to be shifted towards a more cooperative system involving the community at large rather than the appeasement of some groups at the cost of others.

candidate
George Yoshikawa - Student Unity Now

HERE COMES THE S.U.N. PARTY!

If elected, I, George Yoshikawa, intend to foster a positive relationship between UCSB and the Isla Vista community.

I will further students' rights, in particular, advancing the equality of all minorities on campus, including racial, gender, and sexual orientational.

I will work to promote a green, conservational campus while opposing wasteful spending and tuition increases.

VOTE FOR GEORGE, REP AT LARGE

candidate
Jennifer Greeley - Students' Party

Student Government is the place to rise to the level of one's ability, to help one's fellow man and woman. More specifically, to shape and improve the lives of UCSB students. My name is Jennifer Greeley and I am running for Off-Campus Representative with STUDENTS' PARTY. I intend to embrace the differences within this academic community and environmental atmosphere at UCSB. I hope to see a better student government lead by STUDENTS' PARTY facilitating a place for broad expression of the mind and motivation of the student body. With my support of committees such as Media Relations, Increase the Peace and the Academic Affairs Board, I will fuse my personal devotion to a preservation of equalities between students, faculty and the community.

In a revised system of University politics, I hope to see the government more active in positively influencing the campus: in safety issues, architectural planning and assistance, allow the availability of student officers to become intimate with student concerns. I crave a college of interaction and development, cleared of the students' indifference to politics. Nothing is more exciting than sharing in the vivacity of a person persisting on an issue dear to them and here at Santa Barbara there are too many of us unable to share with those unaware of the power of voice. Some perhaps do not know where to contact those who are willing to listen. My name is Jennifer Greeley and I am here to listen. Vote Students' Party!

candidate
Mollie Blevins - Students' Party

Hi my name is Mollie Blevins, and I'm running for Off-Campus Rep. with Students' Party. I'm a freshman and would love to become more involved in the UCSB campus. I'm running for this office because I believe that the students' voices need to be heard. I became involved with Students' Party through their open interview process for candidates. Vote for me and my fellow Students' Party candidates because our goal as a party is to facilitate positive change within the student community.

Christopher Marsh - Student Unity Now

Fellow students, the time has come to embark on a new path to insure that our needs are fulfilled and our potential realized. For the past four years that I've spent as a student at this university, many of my peers and I have commented on the lack of respect our state and our administrators have given us. Our services go unadvertised and our streets grow filthy. Many people either misunderstand or do not realize what our school can do for us. Our tuition continues to rise and we remain without proper representation, and it is the time for a united and powerful student voice to be recognized.

As Off Campus Representative of the Legislative Council, I will dedicate myself to giving the students the advantage. I will be able to strengthen the student union so we may better ourselves and improve our campus. I will increase communication about what our services can do for us, and will work tirelessly to get more money into student organizations. It is vital to ensure that spending not only goes into the beatification of our campus, but towards functional educational tools that would benefit us immediately. If elected as a Representative to the Legislative Council I will fulfill the daily and urgent needs of the student body as well as add strength to our voice on campus.

candidate
Tan Nguyen - Student Action Coalition

Hello fellow Gauchos! My name is Tan Nguyen and I am running for off campus representative.

For the past two years I have participated through the Community Affairs Board with organizations such as Best Buddies and this school year, Advancing College Transitions (ACT), a high school mentor program. In addition, I have worked as a Resident Assistant for Upward Bound, a federally funded college preparatory program for high school students who are of low-income and/or first generation. This school year I am serving on Associated Student's Finance Board. My involvement with these organizations has blessed me so much. It has taught me the importance giving back and serving the local and UCSB community.

The experiences I faced personally and with such organizations have driven me to reflect seriously and act positively, in particular, with underrepresented communities. I will work to establish a safer campus environment by increasing understanding and awareness of sexuality and identities through education. Moreover, I am committed to work with issues concerning UCSB and Isla Vista, specifically the development of the Isla Vista Community Center.

SAC commits itself ensuring that ALL students have a represented voice. To do this SAC will strive to create an environment that is safe for women, the queer community, people of color, people with disabilities, and ALL UCSB students. This is my priority as an off-campus representative. Vote SAC, Taking Action and Attaining Access!

candidate
Chelsea A.L. Moore - Student Action Coalition

There are two types of people: those who complain about their situation, and those who do something to change their circumstance. Chelsea A.L. Moore is a first year student who may not be well versed in all of the political rhetoric of UCSB, but will use her energy and fresh prospective to assist change. Many different issues affect her being a female part of an African-American population of only 2.5 percent. An urgent issue is the lack of outreach funding which will continue to hinder the misrepresentation of many different minorities. Chelsea believes a diverse atmosphere can only enhance everyone's college experience. One plan of action is to place pressure on administration and their proposed allocation of resources. Outreach should be a priority.
Remember: Vote SAC: Taking Action, Attaining Access!

Michelle Garcia - Students' Party

My name is Michelle Garcia and I am running for off-campus representative with the Students' Party. I am a junior this year and have experienced how wonderful and unique attending UCSB and living in Isla Vista is. But there is so much that most students do not even know exists. This is what I hope to change. If elected I will work aggressively to make students aware of the opportunities and resources available to them. We pay for it in our tuition so let's see where our money goes. As an off-campus representative I will not let the students voice go ignored when dealing with the parking issue in IV. Down with parking permits! In addition I will strongly oppose the OSL system of parental notification, which targets students off campus. Outrageous textbook prices, unnecessary new editions and lack of options keep students spending a ridiculous amount of money each quarter. If given the position I will use the resources available to me and show the student body their options to make changes working with professors and the publishers. By educating the student body and myself changes will be made and the students will be heard. Students' Party in Santa Barbara!

Ben Adams - Student Unity Now

Hi my name is__________. I'm going to keep this short so that you don't have to read through a boring, clichŽ statement. I'll start with two words:

Bling Bling! My focus as an off campus representative will be to preserve fiscal responsibility within Associated Students. I would like to serve as a liaison to the A.S. Finance Board. I believe that through my endeavors in athletics, academics and the Greek system, I have been able to understand exactly where funding should be directed.

Financial resources should not only be directed to these categories, however, they should be distributed evenly throughout the student population in a way that leaves every group accounted for. I will ensure this financial attention through unbiased communication and legislation with the hundreds of student organizations on and off campus.

Finally I would like to leave you with two more words.

Sahar Tamari - Students' Party

Hello, my name is Sahar Tamari and I'm running for Off-Campus Rep. with Students' Party. As a strong leader I'm ready to accept all the responsibilities that come with the position to ensure that the students' voices are heard. Tenants rights, high rent, parking, environmental and police issues in IV need to change. Many students do not realize the impact they can have in changing these issues. Through AS, I will make sure students know where to go to have their voices heard, facilitating representation for the students that live in IV. There are many opportunities for students to affect change in their school & community. I encourage all those interested in making a difference in IV to get involved. Your Choice, Your Voice. Vote Students' Party 2004!!

Miriam Shoval - Student Unity Now

For me, student programming and communication are key. I believe that organizing college events creates an opportunity for students to experience new things and meet great people, which they would not normally be able to do in their every day school life. It's easy to get caught up in the same monotonous routine of school, work and studying. Because of this I believe it is important that ledge council put on special events such as dances, concerts, shows, etc. to create a closer, more intimate college community. Through my experiences on executive board at my dorm, and putting on programs at Francisco Torres as well as Hillel, I am confident that I would be able to achieve this goal. And of course since communication is also a priority, I am always open to suggestions for events as well as what YOU would like to see happen on campus.

candidate
Cecile Binmoeller - Student Unity Now

One cup of coffee, a 250-word candidate statement, and a few too many things I want to improve on our campus. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Sissi Binmoeller and I am the girl you can see on campus always on the go, riding on my skateboard wearing a pleaded skirt, and usually on my way to get my cup of Joe. Although I am American, I have had the privilege of growing up predominantly in Europe as well as other far and distant places ranging from Tahiti to Texas. This has made me sensitive to the cultural diversity that is present on our campus but not necessarily emphasized. By working with the available media on our campus, it is my goal to illustrate the vibrancy that composes our campus. I may not have a car but every day I experience the frustrated faces of my many roommates as they return home, defeated, without parking. This issue contends with the importance of tenets rights. I will ensure you can all come home with an affordable housing rate, a parking space, and a smile on your face. I will also work to preserve the environmental agenda that makes our campus beautiful. So whether you see me doing a kick-flip into a backside tailslide, or running on the beach, stop and talk with me and, if you're feelin' it, pick up the pace and run with me towards that setting S.U.N. (Student Unity Now!)

candidate
Matthew Brady - Student Unity Now

All right, some of you know me well while others have just caught fleeting glimpses of my beautiful locks as they bounce around campus. For those who I have yet to have had the pleasure of meeting, your days are numbered. The coming two weeks are sure to be exciting times. I'm going to be shamelessly introducing myself to everyone and I sincerely look forward to listening to concerns, sharing opinions, and making friends along the way. I would actually say that this is the cornerstone of what I have to offer both the SUN party and the students we represent. I am a friendly, understanding, and capable student who gets by in this world by making unprejudiced, rationale decisions in hopes of sustaining the greater good. I have a genuine desire to see our university's legislative council composed of like-minded thinkers who will consistently employ ideals of a similar nature in order to achieve a student body, which will be the student voice. This vision becomes more realistic if you take time to speak with the SUN party's executive candidates and, in turn, realize that in addition to the values and ideals I expressed already, they offer the students and community an extraordinary enthusiasm, impressive leadership and profound proficiency. My personal ambitions and agenda for the coming year include the core issues and concerns that face all students, on and off campus: The parking situation in IV, maintaining a high standard of environmental policy, and fighting for tenets rights.

candidate
Lindsay Saito - Students' Party

Hello, Hello. My name is Lindsay Saito and I'm running for Off-Campus Rep. with Students' Party. It is my first time running for the position so if elected I will bring fresh ideas to Leg Council. In A.S I hope to see more student involvement. Students need to realize that they have a voice on campus. As a part of Student's Party we hope to encourage students to get involved and express their feelings on the happenings around campus. While tackling many responsibilities I can still remain a kid at heart. I like to play at the tidepools and fly kites while enjoying the beautiful coastline. If elected into Legislative Council I hope to be a part of the Shoreline Preservation Fund to help maintain our beaches for future generations. I also have an eclectic taste in music and hope to put on some tight concerts as part of A.S. Program Board. Most importantly, Students' Party wants more good times for UCSB. Students' Party rocks, UCSB student's roll. Together we will rock and roll! Vote Students' Party.

candidate
Nicholas Deien - League Of Independent Candidates

What's up UCSB! My name is Nick Deien and I'm running for A.S. Off-Campus Representative. I'm currently a senior with a double major in Global Studies and Political Science. I know that I am the best candidate for this position because I am more than qualified, hard working, and determined. These qualities are essential in a good leader and I've got it covered.

I am qualified for this position because of the leadership roles and experiences I have possessed. My qualifications include Transportation Host for the 20002 Winter Olympics (I really wanted to do some snowboarding), UCSB Judicial Review Board, RHA Treasurer, RHA Executive Board, and much more. From these opportunities I learned what it takes to be a leader and how to get things done. I know what it takes and the lengths I have to go in order to be effective at my job.

Along with leadership skills I know that I am a hard worker, which is another step to getting things done. In addition to being a full-time student here at UCSB, I also work at the Wine Cask restaurant in Santa Barbara...one of the sweetest restaurants in SB. Am I hard working...yeah! With going to classes, the gym, studying, and working, it should prove that I'm hard working.

Determination is another key trait I possess which makes me a primary candidate. Things don't always go the way as planned so determination is essential in order to complete assigned tasks. I know from experience that things don't come easy, which has made me as determined as I am today. My success so far is proof of the relentless tries that it took to successively complete obstacles in my way.

While no one can become completely familiar with all the resources available here at UCSB, my previous positions have enabled me to become familiar with a lot of different ways to get results. Sometimes you have to be seriously committed to achieve the end result. My resourcefulness, organizational skills, and attitude make me the perfect candidate.

In conclusion, I know that I am the best candidate for this position because of my experience, hard work, and determination. I know that I will do my best and represent the students effectively as the Off-Campus Representative. So, while some have great ideas, knowing where to go and who to talk to can make ideas happen.... think before the freshmen graduate.

Teresa Vuki - Student Action Coalition

My name is Teresa Vuki and I am running for off-campus representative. I am currently the president of the Pacific Islander Student Association (P.I.S.A) on campus. There are many different issues on campus, which vary from student fees to outreach programs. I am a strong believer that students have rights and that our rights should be vocalized and heard. I have been involved in outreach programs that show students that higher learning is not out of their reach. With help from our other Legislative Council members I will ensure that our student voice will be heard. As an active organizer I will advocate a strong voice to diversify our campus and that outreach programs continue to reach out to our communities. As a member of the Student Action Coalition I will work for equal access for high learning, outreach programs for our communities, and lobbying against tuition increases. Remember vote SAC. I work hard for what I believe in and to produce the best outcome for any situation that I come across. Among various goals, I would like to better intertwine the communities of Isla Vista and UCSB, as it is fundamental aspect of our experiences in college. I am willing to address any of your concerns with an open mind and work together to make UCSB YOUR University. I am currently an Off Campus Representative so I have the experience that many candidates lack. Alongside other A.S. members, we brought together students for a BBQ to let them know that A.S. is there for everyone. As this year progresses, I hope to expand my involvement in committees such as Media Relations and CAB, amongst others. As I continue to expand my involvement in committees, I will try and educate myself in a wide range of issues that relate to you, the students I will represent. Vote Students' Party!

After working with them, it is clear that we are all interested in the same thing Ð more student voice, more student involvement, and more good times. I look forward to working on many issues with A.S. such as more fiscal transparency and responsibility, and more accountability to the student population. I am also interested in working with the A.S. Legal Resource Center to make sure that student needs are adequately met. As you're your Off Campus Rep, I will work hard to find reasonable solutions to problems such as parking in Isla Vista, environmental issues, parental notifications, and many others. Again, I am very excited to be running as your Off-Campus representative and working to bring a creative and open mind to student government. My main goals if I am elected includes: 1) establishing a structure similar to the United Nations composed of cultural and ethnic organizational leaders in order to break the divisions between various ethnic groups and create a more aware and unified community at UCSB 2) Fighting against the educational budget cuts that limit necessary student services such as CLAS, EOP and Outreach 3) Improving the cost and quality of off-campus housing 4) Serve on the A.S. Armand Vartanian - Students' Party

Hello UCSB Students. My name is Armand Vartanian. I'm a 3rd year student at UCSB and majoring in Biochemistry. Currently I serve on the Legislative Council and I am running for re-election as off-campus representative for the 2004-2005 term. If elected I will be able to continue my work on the Council and with student organizations like AS Bikes. In AS Bikes we were able to accomplish the resurfacing and improvement of the Goleta Beach path and securing the funding measure for the Broida Expressway. I also wish to tell you that the Students Party is a group of students who want to try and insure that UCSB and especially IV are places where students can have fun. As most of you have probably noticed "outside" forces are trying to stop the party scene in IV and that's not fair. We are all adults and should be treated accordingly. We do not need to be told what to do during our free time and we definitely should not have our school telling our parents what we do here. In response to the parental notification system, I have thought of a counter-measure. I call it the chancellor notification system. Considering that police records are public knowledge I say that the records for the chancellors and teachers should be looked up and any infractions should be reported to the students. That way we can defend ourselves to Mom and Dad by saying, "sure I got a MIP but my professor got a DUI and that's much worse" In conclusion vote for me Armand Vartanian, the Student Party, and the Broida Expressway too!

Jacqueline Bartter - Student Unity Now

I could go on about my personal ambitions of what I'd like to accomplish as a member of UCSB's Legislative Council, but as a Rep., it is more important that my goals be pursued in concurrence with the desires of the student body. This position is meant to be filled by a delegate who can communicate with and decipher the needs of the UCSB community. As a Representative, I would be in the position to lobby on behalf of my fellow student's ideas and opinions. In conjunction, I believe we would create a force powerful enough to make your ideas heard.

I have served as a representative for my peers at the District, State and Nation-wide levels. I worked to successfully express the interests of my fellow students to my District as I served on my local School Board to change policies to better fit the needs of students. I attended 11 state-wide student leadership conferences, giving me the ability and tools to bridge the gap between students and their school and city officials. I represented the State of California at the National Association of Student Councils, discovering that if the will is great enough, you can in fact, be heard on the national level.

A.S. is what you as the voters decided to make it. It's a body meant to serve your desires and amplify your opinions. I would be honored to have the opportunity to take a walk in your shoes and represent you as a member of the Legislative Council.

Hi, my name is Chaz Whatley and I'm running for Off-Campus Rep. with Students' Party. When I'm not having Annual Fun at the Annual Fund, I like to have a good time. As your elected representative I want to make sure your opinions are heard and that all students are represented. The diversity that makes UCSB great must be reflected in your Student Government. When I go to the bookstore every quarter I am shocked by the high prices that I must pay to receive a quality education. Your Student Government must work to solve this problem. Vote for me, Chaz Whatley for Off-Campus Rep. Make sure to Go Green on 4/20. And remember Your Choice, Your Voice. Vote Students' Party!!

Adam Graff - Students' Party

Hey there! My name is Adam Graff, and I am running for an off-campus rep seat with Student's Party. I sit on the current Legislative Council as an on-campus rep, and though I did not originally plan to run for reelection, the executives of Student's Party inspired me to seek another term.

Simply put, A.S. has become crippled by partisan rancor, pet projects, and apathy. Issues such as bans on non-organic t-shirts and other Universities' racist humor magazines steal the limelight, while issues such as the latent bureaucracy of Parking Services, the rising costs of textbooks, student privacy rights (that absolutely bogus parental notification system) and the total lack of a business program fall by the wayside.

While on the council, I worked on the BBQ and department fair projects, raised issues with the Parking Services ridiculous proposals, and began work on the creation of the UCNY program. I am beholden to no one, and I never hesitate to speak my mind, even if I am bucking the party line or stating an unpopular position. I am the director of public affairs of the UCSB Campus Democrats, and I believe in the three Ps: Principles, Pragmatism, and Progressive government.

One final plug: The folks in Students Party are unequivocally committed to restoring the student voice and honing in on the issues that ACTUALLY AFFECT us on a daily basis. A vote for Student's Party is a vote for your voice, your interests, and most importantly, more good times!

On-Campus Representatives

candidate
William "Bill" Shiebler - Student Action Coalition

My name is Bill Schiebler and I am running for Legislative Council On-Campus Representative. I'm a first year Business Economics, Law and Society double major. This year I have been working with groups on campus such as Student Lobby and A.S. Finance Board. I want all students to have a voice in what happens here at UC Santa Barbara. If elected, I plan to: 1.) Promote and expand outreach opportunities to all students both on and off campus by bringing important local, statewide, and national issues back to our university. 2.) Ensure that a strong student voice is represented in administrative affairs and that a continuous dialogue between student constituents and elected officials is maintained. 3.) Organize and petition against student fee and tuition increases. I would be honored to serve as your on-campus representative. On April 20-22, help me continue our fight for progressive change on the UCSB campus by voting for Bill Shiebler for On-Campus representative, and voting SAC: Taking Action, Attaining Access!

Elaine Woodward - Students' Party

Hi! My name is Elaine Woodward and I am a freshman running for On-Campus Representative with Students' Party! I would like to see more activism and involvement on the UCSB campus. I am currently involved in Hall Council at Anacapa and serve on the Executive Board as Athletics chair. I am able to represent and implement the wishes of fellow on-campus residents. Already knowing the concerns and desires of on-campus residents and having the experience of carrying out the needs of the students, I am better able to represent you, the students. Recent events such as budget cuts and tuition hikes have had a direct effect on the A.S. Finance Board and all students. I will be able to look at issues with an open mind while balancing the budget. More involvement within A.S. should be promoted as well as, carried out through student socials and barbecues. Parking in I.V. should not cost the students anything and textbook prices should be lowered. With the budget cuts, the state is trying to eliminate outreach programs. As a member of EOP and CLAS; I believe that without these services the university would be at a loss. As an On-Campus Representative, I will bring forth policies that would help students out financially, increase the money flow into A.S., and promote more involvement within the community of UCSB. The microphone needs to be used so the voices of students are heard! Vote Students' Party!

Maria Harutyunyan - Students' Party

Hi, my name is Maria Harutyunyan, and I'm running for On-Campus Rep. with Students' Party. I have the leadership experience needed to be an affective representative. I was a member of Santa Rosa's Residence Hall, and have worked on several committees planning events meant to unite the hall community. This has given me the experience necessary in working with the Residence Hall Association planning for a variety of events for everyone living on-campus. I'm a very honest, hardworking person who always gets the work done and encourages others to get involved as well. I plan on promoting diversity on campus and helping peoples' voices be heard. I will listen to student's suggestions and any concerns they have. I look forward to working with the rest of Associated Students on improving the programs that the general population may have concerns with. The first step is to have a wide variety of programs on campus, and a more united student body at UCSB. Vote for Students' Party!!!

Salem Kimble - Student Unity Now

Ever been dropped from classes just because your payment was only a day late? Despite the many wonderful aspects of going to school here (ie an astoundingly beautiful beach, a constant and happening nightlife, and, of course, a top notch quality educational facility) there are some policies that just don't make any sense. It's up to us students to initiate the changes we want to see here on campus and I'm convinced that through students working together in collaboration with administration we can make positive changes to how things are run and improve communication on all sides. For instance, did you know there's $11,000 up for grabs every week for organizations to fund alternative programming to IV life on weekend nights? I love it here and would like to do my part to help make our campus community's future positive, productive, and sustainable. With so many changes facing the campus from budget cuts to huge construction projects like the Student Resource Building, I think it's crucial that, as students, our concerns and suggestions are heard and listened to. This is one of the many reasons I'm running for on-campus representative with S.U.N.(Students Unite Now). As on-campus rep I will work to bring students needs to the forefront and work with administration to turn your suggestions into action. Ashley Chapman - Student Action Coalition

My name is Ashley Chapman and I'm running for an On-campus Representative position with the Student Action Coalition. I am a third year Communication and Sociology major. The past three years, I have been highly active and involved on campus socially and politically with a goal of creating and sustaining positive change. I am a member of Akanke, the Black Student Union, and A.S. Student Lobby. I also hold a student position on the MCC Board and live on campus as a Resident Assistant. I believe in the power of the students and that students have the right to be heard. As a member of YOUR legislative council I will do whatever I can to bring YOUR ideas and YOUR concerns to A.S. and to the student population as a whole. I will continue to work closely with underrepresented communities to create programs and set policy that specifically addresses their needs. For example, I will work with the Student Commission on Racial Equality and see to the equal distribution of campus resources and I will continue my work with Student Lobby to sustain and improve outreach and retention. It's true...UCSB is a progressive campus and the Student Action Coalition is a group of strong, active and progressive leaders. Please contact me at achapman@umail.ucsb.edu to talk further about my intentions and your ideas! Vote SAC: Taking Action, Attaining Access.

Frank Justin Pabian - Students' Party

Hello, everyone! My name is Frank Justin Pabian, and I am running with Students' Party for the position of on-campus representative. Over the past year here at UCSB, I have served on the Anacapa Executive Council and as the Co-Chair of CalPIRG. Through these organizations, I was able to work with faculty, students and bookstore officials to lower the cost of textbooks and lobby against publishers who rip students off by artificially inflating textbook prices. A recent study showed that the average UCSB student pays about $980 yearly on textbooks alone - the highest average of any UC school. Something is obviously wrong with this. As a freshman political science and german major, I too feel the financial burden of overpriced textbooks, and do not want to spend nearly $1,000 per year on textbooks for the rest of my college career. If elected, I plan to work with other organizations to lower the cost of education, allowing students from all backgrounds the chance to get an affordable and high-caliber education. Students should be able to have a say in their government. If elected I will hold monthly forums in the residence halls where students could come and voice their opinions. I encourage everyone who is interested to join an AS board or commission to become more active and to vote for Students' Party!

candidate
Raymond Meza - Student Action Coalition

Inclusiveness; as an on-campus representative I will take concrete steps to ensure that UCSB is a safe space for all students. My name is Raymond Meza; I am a first year political science major, the publicity chair of Queer Student Union, and a member of A.S.Queer Commission. This year I participated in the United States Student Associations National Student Lobby Day in Washington D.C. where I gained intimate knowledge on how to pass legislation at every level government. As a member of Legislation Council I will pass bills that: 1.Create a safe space for ALL students 2. Ensure that outreach funding is maintained and expanded 3. Support the creation of a Queer/Gender/Sexuality G.E. requirement to increase the knowledge and awareness to one of UCSB's thriving communities Through my experience in Associated Students and student organizations I have gained extensive organizational skills and have worked hand in hand with groups such as MUJER, El Congreso, A.S. Women's Commission, and Queer People of Color on projects such as funding for the University of California LGTIA Conference at UCSD and workshops on a Queer G.E. Furthermore, this is reflective as what I will do as a Legislative Council Representative, to pass legislation that benefits not one but all facets of UCSB, empowers students, and includes all students in THEIR student government. SAC: Taking Action, Attaining Access!

University-owned Off-Campus Housing

candidate
Neil Visalvanich - Students' Party

My name is Neil Visalvanich and I'm running for the University Owned Housing seat on legislative council. I'm a senior political science and history double major and have lived in the UCSB and Isla Vista community for three years. I love UCSB and would like to dedicate my last year of school to the service of the college community and student issues I've grown to care about. Over the last couple years student government has gotten bogged down in partisan mudslinging and has drifted away from real student issues. It's time to put the students back into student government and start effectively addressing issues that students care about. As your legislative representative, I pledge to work on getting a Broida expressway built, ensuring affordable parking, protecting student privacy and making sure that there is a healthy discussion in the community about issues like law enforcement.

I've worked on a variety of grassroots campaigns since I arrived here 3 years ago and am proud of the work I've accomplished. As a longtime member and current officer of the UCSB Campus Democrats, I've worked hard to get students registered to vote and to inform them about important political issues, like the recent cut to the California education budget. This experience will be of use if I am elected.

Your support in this election is greatly appreciated. I am confident that I, along with the rest of the Student's Party ticket, can make government work effectively for students.

candidate
Jorge Arroyo - Student Action Coalition

Education through experienceÉ
I feel one hindrance of a true education is that students do not transfer their intellect to learning outside of books and classrooms, by forgetting to experience life and learn for themselves.

My name is Jorge Arroyo and I am a 3rd year Sociology major. Working with and helping students has been one of my ambitions while here at UCSB being very active in introducing new students to academia. I have been a Resident Assistant on campus the past two years in the freshmen residence halls, and I will continue next year as a Resident Coordinator in the Single Student Apartments off campus. Along with this position, I plan to further my experiences working to keep students connected to the university as University Owned Legislative Council Representative by giving students a voice where they are seldom heard. I will sit on committees to insure student's needs are met and also informed. If elected, I will work towards keeping outreach programs alive, as this is why I am here today. I will also work on breaking down walls between groups @ UCSB, for knowledge is the only way to surpass our stereotypes and begin respecting each other and not just tolerating our differences. Working with S.C.O.R.E., my hope is to work with people from diverse backgrounds to create an accepting environment for ALL students, and to continue closing the gap between different groups on campus. One of my major goals will be to work with A.S. Queer Commission to represent and improve the status of LGBT students on campus and in the community. Hearing other opinions and different viewpoints is something I am always open to, so feel free to drop me an email: jarroyo@umail.ucsb.edu. Lastly, I challenge you, the student, to think for yourself, but to not close yourself off from learning. Be proactive with your education and also your life. Vote SAC: Taking Action, Attaining Access.

Party Mission Statements

Students' Party

Students' Party is committed to facilitating positive change within the UCSB community. The party will promote a fun, safe, and responsible learning environment that encourages diversity of opinion as well as amplified student empowerment. The collective student interests must be respected and addressed in addition to those of under represented groups within the UCSB community. Students' Party is dedicated to sustaining activism. The party is committed to intelligent fiscal management of all ASUCSB monies. The promotion of new ideas and increased student involvement will be upheld through guidance and accessibility. Guidance is not to impose a personal belief onto another student, but to provide information and the tools necessary for the student to take action. Access to Students' Party will remain open to all students. More involvementÉ more progressÉ more good times.

The League of Independent Candidates

The League of Independent Candidates is founded on the idea that student leadership need not be inhibited by the party system, but be able to flourish as individuals working for the common good of all students. The League of Independent Candidates (LIC) is not a party, but merely a group of students who wish to bypass traditional organization and make more efficient use of resources in order to ensure further cooperation and coordination among students and the campus community. Our goal is to provide educational, representational, and social benefits for the students, without being tied down to set special interests. As an alternative to party commitments, we can serve as representatives who are more in tune to the diversified atmosphere of the student body. The League proposes no restriction of ideology, but strongly encourages a wide spectrum of ideas, as we feel all interests of the student body must be heard.

Student Action Coalition

Student Action Coalition (S.A.C.) commits itself to ensuring that all students have a represented voice. In order to do this, we will create a safe space for women, people of color, people with disabilities, the queer community, low-income communities, and all UCSB students. To ensure that all students are protected equally, S.A.C. will move towards administration accountability and fiscal transparency. S.A.C. realizes that UCSB is an area with diverse environmental issues and will work to keep our school green. From the UCSB campus to the global sphere, the coalition promotes peaceful resolutions without the use of violence. UCSB is a progressive community and our student government should continue to reflect that sentiment. A vote for S.A.C. is a vote for student equality and solidarity.

Student Unity Now

Tired of the man getting you down as he yells "dance puppets dance!" Tired of not even knowing why you're dancing? Sure these moves may not be visible, but is the student voice truly audible? Thankfully, to some extent it is, but S*U*N* is ready to increase the decibels on all levels. Through effective collaboration with the administration and legislative bodies, S*U*N* will create legal, academic and financial services that are missing, while using the technological resources that we already posses to improve relationships and communication. Better communication will enhance student appreciation and inform students on how to defend your rights as tenants, activists, and UC scholars. Like a rabid watchdog S*U*N* will hover over institutions that have a powerful hand in determining our future in a way that ensures that all elements of change are, fair, safe, equal, realistic environmentally sustainable and student-driven. While our attention grabbing antics may be quirky, you can rest assured that our genuine leadership is passionate, progressive, professional, powerful and productive. Already our candidates have taken action on multiple levels by leading A.S committees, speaking at city council meetings, lobbying in Sacramento and defending our school's reputation on national television. Finally, fellow students, no matter what group defines you; male/female minority/majority, introvert/extrovert, queer/straight, freshman/super senior, bicyclist/pedestrian/skater/unicyclist, crazy or sane, Student Unity Now will serve you with a fire that never burns out. So Instead of dancing like puppets, let's all sing together like American Idol's William Hung, with a passion and tenacity that just won't quitÉand once the music's right, we'll all dance to our own beat.

Increased funding is needed to attract headlining acts, reduce ticket prices, and provide more free shows. This year A.S. Program Board provided financial and (or) logistical support to EAB, Hip-Hop Club, A.S.I.A.N., Sigma Delta Theta Sorority, Black Pioneers Renaissance Organization, Associated Students, Mask and Scroll, Norooz Cultural Presentation, Naked Voices, the Gaming Club and many more.
Do you support a one dollar ($1.00) per student lock-in increase per student to support A.S. Program Board to improve services provided, bringing the total amount to five dollars and fifty cents ($5.50)? The fee would be assessed per quarter.

A.S. UCSB Community Affairs Board

The A.S. UCSB Community Affairs Board (CAB) provides students with easy access to community service within Isla Vista, Goleta, and Santa Barbara. Students have the opportunity to explore career options and enhance their education through hands-on experiences. Volunteer opportunities include developing relationships with the elderly, tutoring elementary school children, visiting patients at SB Cottage Hospital, fighting hunger and homelessness, and working with national organizations such as Camp Ronald McDonald and Habitat for Humanity. The current quarterly fee that undergraduates pay is one dollar and fifteen cents ($1.15).
Do you support a sixty cents ($.60) per student fee for the A.S. Community Affairs Board, bringing the total quarterly fee to one dollar and seventy-five cents ($1.75) to increase community service opportunities?

Pro Statement

The Community Affairs Board (CAB) provides opportunities for volunteerism which are essential to individual student growth at UCSB. CAB is one of the largest and oldest student run, student funded organizations in the nation, and needs your support. CAB has never received an increase in its lock-in fee and is the only student organization that is taxed by the state. This taxing has the potential to increase greatly next year and would definitely limit CABÕs ability to serve the community as it has in the past. CAB supports many on-going service projects such as the Family Literacy Program, which pairs children from IV with reading tutors from UCSB, the Best Buddies program, which serves adults with developmental disabilities, the Breakfast Club, which aims to provide breakfast each day to people in IV who are homeless, and many others such as Habitat for Humanity. CAB also works alongside local non-profits including the Transition House, Special Olympics, the Rape Crisis Center, Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter, IV Youth Projects, and many more. Please support the CAB lock-in so that you and your peers can continue to make a positive difference in our local community.

A.S. Business Services

A.S. Business Services Committee is committed to providing low or no cost services for all students of the University of California, Santa Barbara. A lock-in would provide for capital improvements and enhanced services for existing services such as A.S. Bike Shop, A.S. Cashiers/Ticket Office, and A.S. Publications. A.S. Business Services would use a portion of the lock-in to run a ÒBusiness Services Entrepreneurship competitionÓ where students would be competing to create a new business service, or improve an existing one. The development of new business enterprises would generate funds for student programs, groups and services that serve all students.
Do you support a $0.50 per student fee for A.S. Business Services to develop new services and improve existing ones?
