Eucalyptus Grove
The Eucalyptus Grove is a beautiful plot of land shared with and donated by Facilities Management, namely Mary Ann Hopkins.
The location is designed as an area for demonstrations and presentations on sustainable practices, but also serves as our hub for running the recycling program.
Composting:
The Eucalyptus Grove has 3 small and 1 large demonstration vermicomposting bins and 1 large hot compost demonstration bin. These bins were set up and maintained by the compost student workers. Food from these bins is collected from student workers homes and brought to the bins on a weekly basis. The worms digest the organic waste and there feces, called worm castings, are a form of fertilizer which AS Recycling uses for its native plant nursery.
Nursery:
The nursery is a new development this year for ASR. This year we planted over 3,000 native coastal sage scrub plants. These plants will be used to re-vegitate the Eucalyptus Grove.
Plants planted include:
Sage Brush
Coast Golden Bush
Salt Brush
Mugwort
Phacelia
California Fuschia
Giant Rye Grass
California Wild Rose
California Sunflower
Toyon
Lemonade Berry
Coyote Bush
Gum Plant
Bee Plant
Purple Sage
Sea Cliff Buckwheat
Western Golden Rod
Coast Live Oak
Coffee Berry
Recycling Projects:
The grove also houses several projects created by students to show different methods of using recycling materials for art and landscape projects.
Education:
The grove is being designed mainly as a location of learning. The grove is open to local schools, groups and organizations interested in learning more about composting, recycling, native plants and many other aspects of sustainability.
