The Associated Students Recycling Program provides several paid positions to UCSB students. A job with AS Recycling is a rewarding experience where you can earn some money, make friends and improve the state of our environment whether by educating about recycling as an Outreach Coordinator or doing first hand recycling by being a Route Rider.

Recycling Program Worker "Route Rider"
- Route Riders make their own hours, work out doors, get exercise and help the environment while getting paid.
- Responsibilities of the Route Rider include but are not limited to:
- Collecting recyclable materials from the recycling clusters located in designated areas throughout the UCSB campus.
- Transfer these materials via route tricycles (provided by the program) to large capacity dumpsters strategically located around the campus.
- Clean and maintain the overall condition of the recycling clusters while on the route by wiping down the outside of the cluster, picking up materials in and around the cluster, and noting any damages.
- All these responsibilities will be done in accordance with current UCSB health and safety policies.
- Assisting the Recycling Program Coordinator with other duties when needed such as assisting with educational aspects of the recycling program, helping with electronic waste, vermicomposting, nursery work and general program maintenance.
- Route Riders must be: responsible hard working, willing to work in all weather conditions, able to lift 50 lbs and able to communicate well.
- Hours available 8-12 hours/week. Starting wage $9.25/hr
Vermicomposting Coordinator
- Vermicomposting Coordinator work at the A.S. Recycling Eucalyptus Grove and at the Department of Public Worms (DPW) at People’s Park in Isla Vista.
- Responsibilities of the Vermicomposting Coordinator include but are not limited to:
- Maintaining the Vermicompost bins located in the Eucalyptus Grove and DPW by watering and cleaning the bins and monitoring the general up-keep of the bins and the worms.
- Collecting and placing compost from several locations throughout the UCSB and Isla Vista community in the compost bins.
- Harvesting and collecting worm castings and worm tea.
- Developing and expanding the program.
- Vermicomposting Coordinators must be: willing to work outside in all types of weather, enthusiastic about composting, able to work in sometimes unclean environment.
- Hours Available 8-12 hours/week. Starting Wage $9.25/hr
Recycling Outreach Coordinator
Responsibilities of the Outreach Coordinator are as follows:
- Developing programs and materials that educate the campus at large as to what, where, how and why UCSB should be recycling, reducing and buying recycled products.
- To research recycling markets and 'green' recycled products and prices. To communicate with other universities and the local and global community in the search to improve recycling and source reduction procedures; also to identify quality and low-cost post-consumer products.
- To advise campus departments (via MSO or administrative assistants) regarding campus recycling procedures and options for the departmental purchase of recycled products.
- Aid the Recycling Program Coordinators's (RPCs) in programs and other outreach efforts to improve recycling on and around the campus
- Complete routes as outlined in PRW job description when deemed necessary by RPCs.
- Develop educational programs, activities, events and workshops for campus, local schools and local businesses to improve recycling efforts.
- To update the A.S. Recycling Program on any recycling news.
- Proficient personal contact and public relations skills; ability to interact with various agencies, companies and people such as:
- To organize and coordinate educational aspects of the program with the RPCs.
- Hours Available 10-15 hours/week. Starting Wage $9.75
Eucalyptus Grove Development and Restoration Worker
- The Eucalyptus Grove Development and Restoration Worker responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Maintaining the general up-keep of the Eucalyptus Grove by watering, weeding and cleaning the area.
- Expand and develop the Eucalyptus grove by planting, landscaping and building new projects.
- Assist with the development of the Eucalyptus Grove Vegetable Garden.
- Assist with the development of the Eucalyptus Grove Native Plant Nursery.
- Hours Available 8-12 hours/week. Starting wage $10/hr
Recycling Maintenance Worker
Responsibilities of the RMW are as follows:
- Keeping up the working condition of bicycles, including, but not limited to, the following responsibilities:
- Diagnosing problems with bikes through communication with riders or by physically riding the bikes.
- Fixing minor malfunctions on bikes such as chain problems, gear slips, brakes repair, and other miscellaneous repairs.
- Keeping the bikes well maintained, fine tuned, and clean by greasing the chains and washing as the need arises.
- Keeping the coordinators updated on the status of the bikes.
- Keeping a maintenance log available to riders and coordinators that has updated information on the bikes status.
- Picking up and ordering the necessary parts to keep the bikes in working order. Any major repairs or parts needed should be reported to the RPCs before purchase.
- Keeping up the physical functionality and aesthetic appeal of the recycling clusters, also known as berthas which includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
- Patrolling the berthas and working with riders to identify and repair broken or inadequate berthas.
- Assisting in weekly bertha cleanings.
- Submitting a quarterly “state of the berthas” document to the coordinators that outlines damages, cleanliness of berthas, and repairs done.
- Replacing and maintaining the functionality of locks.
- Removing bricks and adding anti-pest grids.
- Replacing damaged or burnt signs.
- Keeping the hinges and doors in working order.
- Other miscellaneous bertha maintenance that may arise.
- Hours Available 8-12 hours/week. Starting Wage $10/hr
Techno Recycling Worker
Responsibilities of the TRW are as follows:
- Maintaining and running the ASR Techno Recycling Program
- Collecting E-waste from designated locations around campus and IV
- Sorting E-waste
- Research and develop Techno Recycling Program
- Expand techno recycling locations
- Mainaining Techno Recycling Bins
- Other duties will be described when hired.
- Hours 10-19 hours/week. Starting Wage $10/hr
Student Program Coordinator
Recycling Program Coordinator (2-3)
Responsibilities are as follows:
- To continually update the A.S. Recycling Supervisor as to the day to day operations of A.S. Recycling and coordinate any such actions with this supervisor.
- To train and retrain the Recycling Program Workers in the procedures, policies and overall program characteristics as outlined in RPW job description.
- To train and retrain the Recycling Outreach Coordinators in the procedures, policies and overall program characteristics as outlined in the ROC job description.
- To supervise and manage the RPW's and ROC's including
- Making sure the routes are completed everyday
- Offering advice and helping RPW's and ROC's whenever possible
- Changing priorities of RPW's and ROC's as deemed necessary
- Initiating promotions as openings arise and discipline for infractions
- Developing and then utilizing a comprehensive knowledge in grant proposal research and development.
- Help Create and manage the budget funded through the annual lock-in fee.
- Creation, development and management of internships.

- To make necessary adjustments to the program in order to maximize efficiency and minimize problems:
- Making sure routes are completed daily in the most effective manner
- Making sure all employee concerns, desires and suggestions are heard and addressed
- Keeping communication open between Associated Students and other concerned organizations
- To organize and coordinate educational aspects of the program with the ROC's.
- To act as a RPW as deemed necessary following the job description of the RPW's.
- Hours 10-19 hours/week. Starting Pay:$11/hour
