About Us

Earth Day 2006The Associated Students Recycling Program is a student funded recycling and composting program responsible for diverting as much waste from our local landfill as possible through methods of educating about reducing consumption, reusing products, recycling products and buying products made from recycled materials. Other A.S. Recycling obligations include increasing the overall recycling rate on campus by recycling aluminum, glass, plastic and newspaper from our recycling clusters we lovingly call “Big Berthas”, recycling electronic waste from our twelve “Techno Recycling” locations on campus and recycling office paper, scrap metal and other miscellaneous items.

This past year has been one of the most successful years in A.S. Recycling history.  By the overall campus recycling efforts we were able to divert 65% of our waste from our local landfill, and prevented thousands of pounds of toxic batteries, computers, cell phones and other electronic waste from reaching landfills by either reselling items to be reused, recycling them or disposing of items in an environmentally safe manner. For the second year in a row we successfully completed an online version of our Green Awards that serve to evaluate the state of recycling in each department and how “Green” each department is.

Through over four years of planting, creating composting displays, recycle friendly landscaping we have finally completed the “Eucalyptus Grove” as a model location for sustainability and a learning tool for kids and adults alike.  In its first full year of operation our “Techno Recycling” program was extremely successful and helped in the proper disposal and recycling of thousands of pounds of toxic materials.

Future plans and goals for the program include increasing overall recycling on campus by installation of more “Berthas” and “Techno Recycling” bins, creating more education about reducing, reusing and recycling through our campus involvement will all members of the UCSB and Isla Vista community, giving tours to children and adults at our Eucalyptus Grove and becoming more involved with the campus in creating and developing a “greener future” for our campus.
