Overview
of discussion (not necessarily in order of occurrence)
♦ Approval
of last weeks minutes.
♦ Scott
o Scott is
heading to Texas for the democrats convention.
He will be working with Laura who is the Young Democrats of America
Disability Caucus Chair. He will be
reporting back to us.
o We can
get money this year! Scott will be
looking into it.
o We are
going to have a bumping party at Scott’s place on the 5th. People who need rides…will get rides. Maybe meeting at the bus circle and all
riding the bus, maybe taking rides from the bus circle. Our party mission: “This is not going to be
the kind of party that you cannot get to.”
Scott to look into accessible bathrooms. Chris to do a flyer and send it out to the CODA group.
§
What do we want to do at the party
·
Ali - Pin the tail on the donkey? Gambling? Rock and Roll? THINK ABOUT
IT PARTY PEOPLE.
♦ Ali
o Junior
wheel chair sports camp having an exhibition wheel chair basketball game during
the women’s basketball game. Let’s
support this! Everyone should come! January 17th 2004 Women's Basketball game
♦ Chris
o OSL
registration – James providing help with registration fees. AS constitution will be used for now. Ali to provide goals and objective to attach
to application. Chris to submit the
application.
o Jim – when
we go with OSL is it going to be the same group under two different offices?
Yes
o James –
we will now be able to access funds from both organizations, AS and OSL. We will be able to book rooms, etc.
Technical support for IV theatre, access to the cliff house (requires
deposit),
o Jim –
issue with the current constitution.
Only talks about students. What
about the community?
o James –
That’s a good point. BIKS (?) is
another organization that is concerned with staff, community, etc. We can reorganize our constitution as we go.
o Chris – I
agree with Jim. Rewriting the
constitution in the future (before the year is over) to better represent our
current mission would be a good use of our time. This would be perfect for a subcommittee.
♦ Ali –
Guiding values, Goals and Objectives. [draft handed out, copy to come in email]
o Think
about what is possible; What CODA can reasonable take responsibility for and
what we need to challenge other offices to take responsible for. What areas can we actually do something
about; directly? What areas should
other offices be responsible for? DSP, Facilities, Financial Aid etc.
o Jim –
what about scholarships? Working to get extra monies available for
students. Add this to the goals.
o James –
the county has resources as well. Be
sure to look beyond the campus for funding and support.
o James –
think about things in relation to time.
Organize around short term and long term goals.
♦ Jim – we
need to talk about how to advise the ADA committee in the use of the monies
available from the cell phone towers (approx 85,000).
♦ Ed – has
prepared a disability resource list. Go to http://www.gsa.ucsb.edu/,
click on resources on the left hand side.
♦ Chris –
Do we have any members that are considering officer positions? Possibilities include:
o Outreach, grant writing, social, promotions,
♦ The
legacy of Mel Fabi – self promotion. When
he was here he got a lot of publicity for us.
Nominations for best new group, awards…How can we take advantage of
this?
♦ Ed – The
survey is on for January. It looks like
it is going to be for graduate students only.
♦ Ali – We
have an ADA meeting coming up. Is there
anything that you want us to address at the meeting? PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT AND EMAIL EITHER ALI OR CHRIS BEFORE
DECEMBER 3rd. Come to the
meeting. Some issues:
o Brail
signage –Phelps and South Hall are troublesome (Jeremy)
o More
student representation on the board.
Ensure that students can come to the board. West remembers being told
that the meeting is open to everyone.
o New
buildings how is that going regarding access.
How are the contractors responding?
§
Jim – There is a 20% increase allowance from the State for upgrading
access to buildings that are being renovated.
o Disabilities
that are avoidable…how are we addressing carpal tunnel, tendonitis, back
problems, vision problems, hearing loss.
Are we educating the campus?
♦ James To
– offering to help with back channeling.
o January
22nd is the OSL leadership conference from 5 -7pm in Corwin. There is a call for papers/programs. If we wanted to due a workshop on access
etc. we could do one during that
workshop.
o James is
on the committee for AS, UC, GSA, OSL group service awards. He wants to support us.

Upcoming Agenda:
