Overview of discussion (not necessarily in order of occurrence)

Sam – freshman seminar on disabilities in the media, W04, Singer

        Scott

o       Update on the meeting at DSP last Thursday

§         Discussed the idea of a student advisory commission.  This will be a campus committee not a student group – a lot like the ADA committee.

§         Some issues are:

·        a localized testing center, with paid staff, for extended test time.

-space, exclusivity (does this promote segregation?)

·        Ideally each disability should be represented

·        What about faculty advisors?

§         Next meeting will be on 11/13/03, Thursday @ 1:30 in the DSP office.   COME.

o       The Grass roots seminar is this weekend.

o       Office stuff

§         We need a LOGO and a sign for our office.

§         Jean to bring in office supplies

·        Dry erase board and every thing else…

§         Clean up and decorate?

§         Bring poster

§         What about a key pad for the door?

§         What about a fridge?

o       Finances

§         Scott has made a budget and turned it in.

        Ed

o       Brought in a PC computer.  Thank you Ed.

        Ali

        Chris

o       Some students could use an adaptive technology specialist on-call – paid by the DSP (or a community service type of position – Honors Programs), recruited and organized by CODA

§         What about the RCC (resident computer consultant) folks?

·        We could do the training.

o       For personal computers and for assistance on the library computers during off hours.

        Jean

o       Looking into some monies – available through local banks, and the NIDRR website.

        James

o       Maria Herrera-Sobek, VC of Diversity, is interested and supportive of us.  Believes that students with disabilities are a diverse group.

        Internship opportunities

Budget person – We need someone as a budget person to seek out funding, manage monies, and other.  (maybe a couple of positions?)
