Overview of discussion (not necessarily in order of
occurrence)
Persons Present - Anne Kariuka (our new leg. con. rep.), Sam M., West L., Ed C., Ali A., Eric R., Scott
T., Elisabeth K., Jeremy J., Jim M. and Katie.
1. No one had anything to say or add to our last week's minutes/agenda.
2. We wished Ali (2/12/04) and Eric (2/06/04) their Happy Birthdays.
3. DAW - Thanks to midterms, Ali admits (with an apologetic tone) that she hasn't done much on it. We
need to work out the problem of when (which week) we'll host the DAW. Ali will go through the Spring
quarter calendar to make sure that DAW will not overlap with other bigger events.
B. Sam is working on the sports events for the DAW.
C. Chris and Scott will work on possible films, talking to Dr. Singer, etc.
D. Ali wants to incorporate Leg. Council's wheelchair event into CODA's Daw event. We've talked about other
day-long events such as being blindfolded, earplugs etc to give people a sense of what's like to be disabled. Be careful! We don't want the volunteers to think that it is fun. We have to make sure that nobody
will get hurt (blindfolds). We want to make sure that participants will not be over sympathetic--i.e., "Poor
disabled people. How could they live everyday like that?" etc.
E. Somebody needs to look into the RC's fund for the disabled program. What is happening over there--if
anything at all?
F. Ali asks that we all keep our eyes open for possible brochures, handouts, pamphlets, etc that we
could use during the DAW.
4. We have a new Leg. Con. Rep. Her name is Anne Kariuka (I hope I am spelling her name right. She
might have an I at the end of her last name, Kariukai.) She has a class from 2:00-2:50, but since
the teacher lets the class go around 2:30, she'll try to be here every week.
5. KCSB Meeting - The meeting was held as planned (2/10/04 6:30pm). Ali, Sam, West, Vicki and Keith were
at the meeting.
A. Within the next 10-14 days, we'll be producing a sample radio show. Based on that, KCSB people will
give us feedback, how we did, what needs to be improved, are we good enough etc.
B. Engineering programs will cost us very little or nothing at all. We have access to KCSB's recording and
control devices, making long distance calls, studio for panel discussions, can check out portable devices,
etc.
6. Mercury Emissions - Scott didn't have much. I'm not even sure if he knew about it. But we should come back
to this in the future. I think it's a great way to link up with other organizations on campus.
7. Sedgwick Reserve - We have been invited to visit UCSB's Sedgwick Reserve. Everyone agreed that we
should take a trip up there.
A. A trip might be important for three reasons:
1. This will be a great opportunity for us to test our mobility issues. UCSB doesn't have a single
wheelchair-lift van that we know of. How can a student in a wheelchair participate in club activities when
the activities are off campus? Can we force OSL to modify one of their vans? Is there a fund set aside
for this purpose? How can we work out the problem of transportation? Etc.
2. It will be an opportunity for us to learn the meaning of "accessible" from other people. Accessible
to one group may not be accessible for another group, etc.
3. It would be nice to have a social/picnic event for the CODA members.
B. West spoke with Michael Williams's secretary. Call was made to thank them for their invitation. She was
very nice and said that they are not going anywhere and that we can let them know when we want to visit
the Reserve.
8. Open Forum - Nobody had much to
say. We ended early.
