West Campus
If
you've been in Isla Vista, chances are you've headed out to Coal Oil Point
and used the path that connects Isla Vista to Sands Beach.
This popular path along the west campus bluffs (constructed in 1986) is
now highly braided and rutted out. AS BIKES is committed to enhancing
this path to make it safer for users as well as make it more defined to
protect sensitive bluff habitat.
Each
winter, the path becomes a muddy mess. As users navigate pools, the path
becomes wider and sesitive bluff habitat is destroyed. With proper drainage
and resurfacing, we hope to make this popular and highly traveled path
safe all year long.
Since Fall 2002, the Shoreline Preservation Fund has been working to gain
approvals from UCSB to pay for restoration of the West Campus bluff path.
After many meetings with university officials, plans are now in the works
to begin construction of a new path by September 2006. AS BIKES approved
$20,000 to contribute to this endeavor. An additional $40,000 was pledged
by Shoreline Preservation Fund. |
