Riders first come to our office at Facilities Management to
sign out a bike. They pick up a clipboard detailing one of our 25
routes- five different routes five days a week. The office is also
where we take care of all the administrative duties-make calls, send faxes,
hold meetings, etc.
The AS Recycling electric vehicle is useful for
picking up and dropping off equipment, such as the green office pack containers
or the little blue clip-ons. It is fun to drive, even though it doesn't
go over 25 mph.
All of our custom-made bikes, along with some of the other
equipment, are stored in our trailer at the AS Recycling Eucalyptus Grove.
We hope to fix up this little area soon and make it into a nice place to
raise recycling awareness.
The red bike is probably the favorite of all
the bikes. It carries six plastic bins in its carts, which are used
to transport recyclables.
The riders visit all of the recycling clusters on their route.
Within each week, they visit the 72 clusters on campus at least twice, if
not everyday. They are responsible for emptying the glass, plastics,
aluminum, and newspaper onto the back of the bike.
Route riders are also responsible for keeping
the clusters clean. Night-time visits from hungry animals can leave
our clusters covered in footprints.
Finally, all of the recyclables are biked over to one of the
big turquoise recycling dumpsters located on campus. From here, the
Community Environmental Council picks them up to be processed and re-used
with no charge to the school or our program.
