UCen and residence halls practice commingled recycling in which trash and recyclables are mixed together. MarBorg Industries collects this material. Goleta Material Reclamation Facility (MRF), owned by MarBorg Industries separates this material.
Commingling means collecting two or more types of materials in one receptacle to be sorted later. Commingling is more convenient and saves space, but the quality and quantity of recycled products is reduced.
A.S. Recycling Program and UCSB’s physical facilities do not follow commingled recycling methods. Although most residents in Santa Barbara County have commingled collection, UCSB continues with the integrity of source separation. Preserving the quality of recycled materials is an integral part of closing the loop.
