TECHNO TRASH PROGRAM


Introduction

Enacted in 2005, Associated Students Recycling Program is proud to provide a program to responsibly dispose of your electronic waste. Electronic waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the US. The EPA estimates that the US disposes of 3 million tons of electronic waste, and only a small percentage of this waste is disposed of responsibly. United States ships 80% of our electronic waste to developing countries where it is disposed of by unprotected workers.




Toxicity and Resource Consumption!

Producing electronics is one of the most resource intensive and toxic industries in human history. Over 1000 toxic chemicals used and produced throughout the process of making electronics have been proven to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, and can cause severe reproductive harm.



State Regulations

State regulations require the generator of a waste to determine if it is a hazardous waste (California Code of Regulations Section 66262.11 of title 22). Wastes are consider hazardous when they exhibit one or more of the following characteristics: toxicity, ignitability, corrosivity or reactivity. Most techno trash exhibits the toxicity characteristic due to the lead content as well as other heavy metals.

What comprises Techno Trash?

  • Batteries
  • CDs, DVDs, diskettes, audio & video tapes
  • Electronic devices: cell phones, PDAs, handheld games, CD & Mp3 players
  • Inkjet cartridges, copier toners

NO

  • Light bulbs. Please save these for ???
  • Trash. It ruins potentially usable electronics and creates a mess.

  • Students: Call and leave a message at A.S. Recycling (805) 8937765. The techno trash coordinator will come and pick it up.
