Classroom Readers

The A.S. Notetaking and Publication Service also provides classroom readers to the UCSB community. We have provided readers for over ten years and have gained valuable experience in the production of this type of educational material.

The ASNS/PS accepts originals for processing up to three weeks prior to the beginning of the academic quarter. Of course, we accept originals throughout the quarter for processing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How would you like to receive the originals?

The condition of originals received by the ASPS determines the amount of time it takes to process your reader. All originals must be turned in "one-sided" with little or no black around the margins of the pages. Wrinkled or torn pages should be re-shot prior to submission to our service. In addition, any staples or paper clips should be removed. Unless otherwise stipulated, the ASPS assumes that the order of your originals is the order in which you would like to have your reader. Make sure that you have written the author's name, publisher and date at the top of each article of your reader.

What does ASPS provide in the way of preparing a reader for processing?

The ASPS will paginate each page, fill in a table of contents provided by the instructor, design a cover, and insure that two-sided formats are followed.

How many days in advance do you need to receive the original to have the final product ready for my students?

The turnaround time for readers depends on the number of pages of the original, the number of copies to be run, and the condition of the original received by our services. Normally, it takes about 48 hours to prep and run a typical classroom reader. During our rush periods, it may take as long as 72 hours to process a reader. Our rush periods run from one week before classes begin through three weeks into the quarter.

What about copyrights?

The ASPS takes copyright issues very seriously. For the past seven years, we have carefully researched this issue with regard to classroom readers. It is suggested that instructors carefully read UCSB's policy regarding "fair use." As a nonprofit service producing educational material, the ASPS meets most or all of the requirements for fair use publishing. Please call our offices for more information on copyright issues. Gaining copyright permissions from authors and publishers is always recommended.

Do you provide complimentary desk copies?

Yes. The ASPS will deliver up to three desk copies per reader published at no charge. Any copies beyond three will be charged at the posted price. When you receive your desk copies, your reader is on our shelves and available to your students.
