Frequently Asked Questions - A.S. Notetaking Service

Why do you print your notes on red paper?

Lecture notes are printed on red paper in order to discourage unauthorized copying. As soon as it has been projected that the ASNS will make enough revenue by the end of the quarter to meet its expenses, the ASNS will switch to white paper.

Why isn't the ASNS open during Finals Week?

The A.S. Notetaking Service is largely staffed by students like yourself. During Finals Week, our student employees are studying or taking finals. We always open on the day following the last day of classes in order to get the final lecture(s) to you in time to prepare for your finals.

Why are some pages of the notes reduced while others are full size?

The ASNS will reduce some pages of its lecture notes in an effort to save paper. Saving paper not only helps the environment, but it helps to keep the costs of the notes down.

Is it possible to get a refund if I drop a class or I no longer want the notes?

A full refund is available to you through the first two weeks of the academic quarter. After that refunds are made avialable on a pro-rated basis. 10% is taken off of your refund for each week that passes. For example: If you bring in your card and ask for a refund during Week 3, we will receive 70% back. If you request a refund during Week 6, you will receive 40% back, and so on.

I received a full subscription with all of the back notes and I notice that some lectures are missing. Is there a reason why some lecture dates are not in my package?

Lecture numbers that are missing in a series of notes usually means that there was no lecture for that period. Lecture notes are not taken for exams, canceled classes, or film periods.

Why are some A.S. Notes available at 1:00 p.m. the day after the lecture and other A.S. Notes aren't available until 1:00 p.m. two days after the lecture?

In most cases, A.S. Notes are available by 1:00 p.m. the day after the lecture was presented. In cases where the professor wishes to review the lecture notes prior to publication, an extra day is added to allow for this review. When you purchase your subscription, a clerk will inform you whether your notes are being reviewed or not.

What are the qualifications of your notetakers?

In most cases, our notetakers are graduate students who are majoring in the field for which they are taking notes. Often, these notetakers are the TAs in the class. About 35% of our notetakers are the actual professors/instructors who are teaching the courses. In rare cases, the ASNS will hire highly qualified undergraduates who have proven abilities to meet our requirements. The quality of the lecture notes you receive can vary depending on the notetaker. If we discover that one of our notetakers is not meeting our quality requirements, we will find a new notetaker as soon as possible.

How come you don't start distributing lecture notes until the second week of classes?

The ASNS always uses the first week of classes to make sure that the notetakers we have hired are meeting our requirements and taking quality notes. We evaluate our new notetakers based on the notes that they turn in during the first week. Lecture note distribution always begins the first day of the second week of classes and will include those notes taken during the first week.

What if I have a complaint about the quality of the lecture notes I am receiving?

At ASNS we regularly review the quality of our lecture notes to insure that they meet our high standards. After the midterm exam, we give subscribers an opportunity to evaluate both the quality of the notes and our service overall. Evaluation forms are distrubuted at our windows and can be returned to one of our sales staff. The evaluations are read and each notetaker receives the results of his/her evaluation. The evaluation process helps us determine which notetaker be hire in subsequent quarters. You are encourgaed to ask for an evaluation or comment on our service at anytime during the quarter . Your feedback is important to us and your comments, both positive and negative, are appreciated.

Remember that A.S. Notes are best used in conjunction with class attendance. No set of published notes can cover absolutely every aspect of the lecture presented. It is strongly recommended that you attend each and every lecture and take your own notes, while using A.S. Notes as a comprehensive review.

The A.S. Notetaking Service is dedicated to providing the highest quality notes to you on a timely and reliable basis. We are always looking for ways to make our service better. If you have any comments or suggestions that could help us in this effort, you are encouraged to let us know.
